I guys,
I enjoy your site greatly. Can someone guide me to what im seeing. I have looked at two MTX 1998 zx-2 latley and both had very very sloppy stick shifts. Can you tell me what usually causes this and how hard of a job is it to fix it?

What do you mean by sloppy?

Probably Shifter bushings, depending on rust levels, easy to PITA.

A short throw shifter would probably help also. The ZX2 isn't the best shifting car out there, so you are going to have a little slop.
Defining slop would help though.

Im saying unusual slop and unusual travel between gears very very long through. Cant imagine just a bushing issue but maybe.

It probably is. And the stock shifter... well let's just say it isn't a short shifter... If anything it's a mega-super long shifter.

Our stock shifter has 3 joints in it. We can replace the bushings in the end ones. Energy Suspension has harder urethane ones, and they work great. Grease the wee out of them.
Also the shifter fulcrum ball may have a problem - worn or broken plastic cups.
Easily fixable.

Just slap a TWM shorty in there and call it a day.

Simplicity - Too simplified - the front bushings or fixed joint may be bad.

Just thought I would post again guys and let you all know what I found. There are two rods ( 1" pipes) leaving the shifter ( under the car) one is the rod that acually shifts the gears that goes to the trany. The other rod is just a rod that supports the boot that is also mounted to the trany. It was this rod that was broken making the whole shifter boot sloppy. I replaced this broken rod with a home made one. Problem gone now. Thanks for all input.

This is why I go underneath my car and spray Rustoleum on everything that is not the exhaust.
