Looks like it'll stay over land. What does this translate to? Hopefully a big party!!!

Latest track has it coming in about the same as Charlie , another direct hit . Went out early this morning to get gas for the generator , people were already lined up . Filled four 5gal. cans $76.00 , hope I don't need it , if not it'll go in the boat if it makes it through .

No kidding?! That's a cutter right?? I'm 90% sure that was the ship my little bro was on for a long time. He was stationed at the st pete base and is now up in Delaware. He's one of the guys on the radios and does encryption stuff.

Small world lol.

As for the storm, i guess we'll know in a couple more days. Prepping for a tropical storm seems pointless to me. everytime i go to walmart from here out i'll prolly just pick up a few extra gallons of water instead of waiting for a mad dash the day before the storm. Only thing i worried about in any of the other ones was the power getting knocked out causing my fish to die. This year, i have no fish, so not many worries. I just have to keep the wife calm cause this is her first hurricane season :). She already told me we have to go to the store and by enough canned food to last a few weeks so we dont starve... She's also from SE Asia where a typhoon will wipe out entire villages and ish. she doesn't understand building codes and various measures taken to avoid big issues like that. she thinks a little wind will collapse the house like a hut or something.

Edit: I want to say he was on the cutter Dependable and then Venturous after that. Could be the other way around though.

Edit again: after re reading my post it sounds kind of arrogant. sorry to anyone that's had a rough time in these storms if your offended by my arrogance. Katrina, Andrew, Charlie, etc. I certainly understand the capability of these storms, but my area hasn't been hit in a VERY, long time. 100 years or something. its hard for me to take a storm serious after 24 years of near misses and big misses. we've gone to the beach, flown kites, etc during the hurricanes we've had so far. the only thing i'd say i'm really worried about is a tornado *shrug*. Oh and i have some REALLY tall trees near my house that could fall down. That'd suck hardcore if it landed on someone's house. They are going to be removed as soon as i have a few thousand to hand over to the tree guys.

I'm still hoping it stays west, Charlie was a Cat 2-3 when it hit, not sure. Hope this one don't even get to Cat 1. Yea it doesn't look too good for FL now

When Charlie was finished we had almost 40K in damages , Wilma left about 2K in damage . All I need is another good hit and I'll be looking for someplace quite to move too .

So it's not directly over cuba area anymore... is it growing in strength to become a hurricane now?

CraZx2ing
08-17-2008, 06:30 PM
no. its still south of cuba and will have to cross over... it'll stay small for a bit longer. Looking in at the map, it looks like it's still in the open water but not open enough to grow. It could pick up a bit (maybe) if If it hits hurricane strength it will be after cuba before florida in that big open area. Check out the sat pics... the "rain bands" are starting to hit FL...

so he was an ET or an IT? i was an EM...so i worked in the engine room, and all things electrical. once it got to a power supply, my job ended and the ET's and IT's would take over...all that fancy stuff like circuit boards were out of my rate (although i work on them a lot at Caterpillar).

i was on the USCGC Confidence out of Cocoa Beach, FL...but when it was in the yards for a few months, we took the Venturous out for a 2 month patrol between their crew's patrols. that boat was seriously dying. i thought our 42 year old POS was falling apart...ours ran like new compared to the newer 38 year old Venturous. we returned her in much better shape than we got her in. their crew seemed a lot more laid back, though...which could be why their engineering department NEVER did PM's. we took it out..i wanna say..August/September of 2006.

Ah, i wonder if you two ever crossed paths? I don't know much about the job he was doing, but it had to do with communicating between other boats on the water and with the base. so if a mayday came in, he would answer it and advise the base and the people above him and they'd tell him how to respond. It was pretty cushy from what i understand. He used ot be stuck painting and stuff before that. He's been in for about 3 years i think.

Not too close to the coast... i'm sure she'll be fine as long as she's not in a mobile home or an area prone to flooding. Coastal areas and places that flood have got to be the worst. I'm in a no evac zone because i'm on one of the higher pieces of land in pinellas county... like 20ft above sea level lol.
