I'm installing a new trans into my car (replacing the zxtuner trans with stock) and I noticed that the pilot bearing is all the way inside its hole. It's so far in that, with both shims on the bell housing, the transmission input shaft won't reach the pilot bearing.

How far is the pilot bearing supposed to be seated inside that hole?

The bearing goes into the bore with the edge of the cage at the edge of the bore after the radius . The bearing will seat in the bore where it should . The bore depth is about 1-1/4" a little longer then bearing which is about a 1" . The short small diameter snub nose of the shaft rides inside the bearing . Check to make sure you don't have a broken bearing and the end of the cage is still in the bottom of the bore .

You are smart to check things like this - many are in a rush to get the job done and drive, they miss seemingly unimportant things like this.
But it sounds like it is broken somehow, or squished. Is it a new part?

Thanks for the responses.

Pilot bearing, clutch, etc. are not new. They were new when the previous owner put in the S/R clutch.

I double and triple-checked my measurements. It looks like the shaft will ride in the input shaft about 4 mm -- which is nowhere near the entire depth of the bearing.

The bearing looks fine, not crushed or broken. It's seated all the way in.

4 mm still seems like an awfully small contact area for that shaft to ride on compared to the depth of the bearing. I can't fit another pilot bearing in the bore without it sticking out, so that's out of the question.

Should I be worried about this small contact area, or is this how it's supposed to be?

If you are so unsure about it, get a removal tool from a transmission shop to borrow and then install the new bearing. I blew a pilot bearing or my clutch disc went first, idk. but both we're destroyed on my trans.

I'd get a new one and carefully install it for more contact.
Now you will be happy and sleep better.
