So I'll be buyig a new car within the next year. I haven't decided exhactly when and narrowed it down to a few models. 2009 WRX, 2009 Mazdaspeed3, 2009 VW GTi with DSG, and 2009 Volvo C30.

I would recommend the WRX, or the Volvo. The C30 is a sexy looking car. The WRX is infamous for being a great car. Mazda.......uhhhhh.....yeah.......VW's suck ass in my opinion.....Again, that's just my opinion. WRX has the edge, as the C30 is a bit unproven as of now.

MSP3. Those cars are like a nice set of tits. Wonderful. That is likely the car I will buy right out of college. I think they are a great car for the money and can be made quick as hell with a few mods.

MS3, buddy owns one. Haven't had a problem with it. Only thing he has done was the speed3 intake and rims. Get's 24mpg if he stays out of boost around town.

GTI or the WRX. i test drove a C30, and it just felt like a grandma's car. i just didnt care for it at all, but it does look good.

My friend has a 08 WRX and he had a 05 Wrx before that, they are so much fun to drive and work on. and with the larger turbo on the 09 it will be even better.

Which optional suspension did the C30 have that you drove? I think the C30 is rather deceiving. All the comparison tests I've seen show that because of the overactive traction control, it hurts its off the line performance. Also, it has a very broad and flat torque curve that gives you less of a feeling of acceleration. from a 5-60 MPH roll, its faster than the Mazdaspeed3, Caliber SRT-4, WRX, GTi, and Mini Cooper S. The same traction control also hurts its 60' times, which hurts its 1/4 mile time. Even though it has about 35 less HP and 45 less lb-ft of torque than the mazdaspeed3, the trap speeds of both cars are very close.

The main issue I have with the C30 is that the traction control and stability control kick in a bit too early and that can hurt its off the line performance and autoX type manuvering a little. Its in the name of safety being a volvo I guess.

Yea the larger turbo, more power, and improved suspension of the '09 make it very tempting.

just get a used evo 8 or 9, there right around the 20 g's for a good one, and are better than all those

If you are going to keep the car for more than 5 years, GTI or WRX. I love the GTI, but lots of dealers suck. Make sure it is a good dealer if you choose Mazda or VW.

I never considered an EVO because I'd have to deal with Mitsu's sub par reliability and crappy build quality. Also I wouldn't buy a used evo because 99% of them I've sene for sale are beat and abused by their owners.

I had to pick the Speed3 because I just got 1.

I grabbed one with the GT package, and love it! 2nd choice was a WRX, but similarly equipped it would have been well over 30k.

I was also considering a GTI, but not with DSG. DSG is a gimmick. It might be fun for a little bit, or may save you some time on the track, but for normal driving it's annoying, and in full auto mode it sucks. The 6 speed version is much nicer, but then you have to worry about crazy ass VW problems.

Volvo, , , not for me, but isn't it basically the same chassis as the Speed3? Which is also the newer euro Focus chassis? If a Focus ST were on sale in the US with the T5 motor, that wouldn't have been my first choice, but the Speed3 ended up being the available alternative for me. If you like Volvo, how about an S40 with the T5? Or do you want a hot hatch?

MS3. Haven't had any experience with the other cars, but I know my brothers MS3 is a freaking blast. We drove from the bottom of Louisiana up I-49 to the top @ around 110 mph the whole way and got about 24 mpg. Hard to beat that for the price they're asking.

Yeah, Drew knows all about MS3 being beasts. A beast that ate his S/R for breakfast and crapped out a Pinto. (Also a beast that I get to drive around for a week while my brother is out of town on business :D)

I've been disappointed with my WRX since day one but mines an 02, besides might as well go all the way and get the STI or you'll be regretting it. My suggestion is something not on your list. The Turbo Colbat SS. Its getting great reviews, beating cars well out of its price range. My choice personally when I get back to the States will be an Evo X or whatever is new when I decide to come back.

I test drove two Colalt SS's. Other than the nice seats, the interior was nice for a $12,000 car, but sucked ass for a $23,000 car. The handling and power was good, but cars liek the Cobalt SS are things you buy used so you don't get hit with 40% depreciation in a year.

I voted WRX from personal experience. I'll tell you why.

Speed3: FWD and that much power.

VW: Vit has recently had an experience with VW that has reinforced my hatred of them.

C30: Very good cars, but FWD and all that power again. And a 2 door hatch isn't super practical. Motor very tunable however and from what i understand, can be made very fast.

WRX: As Eric said, best AWD system ever made. Motor tunable, parts readily available at a moments notice. I've beat the piss out of mine for 57k miles (42k of it w/ 40 more awhp than stock) and no tranny failure, engine failure, turbo failure, anything failure. Also, the new WRX's have ditched the weakness of the older ones, which is interior quality. While i like my interior, the '08/'09 interior is immaculate compared to it.

Mazdaspeed Miata.

(I voted for the 3)

GTI is heavy and slow, though classy and nicely appointed. If I wanted a vee-dub, I'd go R32.

I would say the GTI. I love the way they look and they are very well built IMO. German cars are better than Jap cars, I feel. Though I would assume that the WRX has a better aftermarket (rice and not rice) so you'd prolly get more power out of it, and the WRX probably is better handling.
