As many of you might know, I am a manager at a fast food restaurant.

One of the biggest fears in the industry are buses. One minute you are fine, the next there are thirty teens all wanting food.

Well last night I had two trainees because mondays are normally slow. You guessed it. We got a bus. Thirty seven people including the coaches, and driver of the bus.

So I am running around, helping the front, helping the back, all kinds of fun crap. And a guy comes in. He works at a car dealership. And I don't mean a used car dealership where you can get great deals on junk. It is part of a chain that has several lots. As a joke I asked him. "You guys aren't hiring by any chance are you?" Sure enough, they are.

So he called his boss up, without me knowing what he is doing. I'm busy cleaning up from the bus that is now leaving.

He comes up, tells me that if I can go up and talk to Tony, tell him that Ray sent me.

So I grab a deposit bag, make up the excuse that I am going to the bank and head on over. It's less than a mile from work, so it only takes me a minute to get there.

I'm expecting the worst. I'm in my BK uniform, sweaty, glasses smudged, and I smell like fries.

Talk to the one guy up there (no idea he was the owner) and then I talk to the manager. Tell him a bit about myself.

He then tells me he isn't going to offer me a job. My heart sinks. He says he is going to offer me a career.

Pay is 9.50 an hour, plus commission. Benefits are complete with dental, vision, medical, 401k. Everything a guy could want. Oh, and demo cars. They pay the insurance, I grab any car off the lot, and I drive it for 45k miles.

I told him that I would have to think about it. He said that is what he wants me to do, and call him on monday and let him know.

I am leaning towards going for it. I would get free access to the body shop/service center. Discounts on buying cars, demo car whenever I want it, health benefits, and a retirement plan.

So, I am basically on cloud nine. I ask him why? I didn't want to be rude, but looking the way I did, I was thinking it was going to go a different route.

He said that in 1985 he was just like me. Working at a job he didn't like, making jack shit. He started washing cars there right out of high school. A year later the owner (who has since sold it to his son along with four of the other lots) told him that he had potential. That, and I remind him of himself when he first started.

He does want me to write down a list of questions I have, and we will talk to the other managers (and the owner) and then we can go ahead and start the paper work.

I think I am going to take it. It is a great opportunity. 9.50 isn't much. However add on commission and then the benefits and the demo car privalidges. I really can't say no.

Definitely give it a shot.

Look at it this way. You won't see many (if ever again) offers like this.

Restaurants are always looking for managers if you need to leave this job.

Also, a lot of commission jobs have no base salary, this one has a decent one. It's a good offer.

Well I hope you like high pressure sales.

quoted for truth man. Worst come to worst you leave there and just go to some other fast food place or something. This is a damned good opportunity.

I say jump on this...don't let this pass you up.

This could be one of those things you think back on and regret not doing.

Yeah, I think I am going to go for it. The benefits alone are spectacular. And yes John, I am ready for it. My last job was working for the radio station selling advertising. That was more high pressure.

You should be fine then. Radio ad sales is a tough business.

You didn't say what brand of car dealership... Salespeople at Toyota and Honda dealerships are probably doing better than salespeople at Jaguar or GMC truck dealerships right now.

hopefully it is a brand selling decently in the current economic climate.

Pontiac, subaru, gmc, buick, and ford/mercury.

Pontiac and Subaru will kick ass.

Ford trucks will also kick ass.

If you don't take it you're an idiot. I know you aren't making the slam money at BK, and this is a much more respectable (no offense, seriously) job by far. Which would you rather say. You work for BK or you work for a car dealership.

And buster, don't respond to that, LOL.

Best of luck to you, Mr. Connal!

Does BK not pay very well or something? I had a friend that was a manager of a fast food place made 50k a year. Not to bad I don't make that at 20/hr.

You talked me into it.

If he's able to take care of his family, what other people think of his job shouldn't matter.

A lot of restaurant managers DO make good money and to some people, car salesmen can be ranked with lawyers and politicians, so you'll get different opinions from different people.

Making other people happy shouldn't factor into his decision.

There, how do like that?

i just got a job at a mazda dealership. Dude you will like it. if you can sell anything you can sell a car. i look at it like this if they are going to buy a car they are going to buy a car so why not buy from you.

Buster

Yep, plus cars are something people NEED to have, unless they enjoy their bicycle.

Radio ads are probably something you have to talk people into.

I'm thinking about going to some dealerships...just have to find the right ones...Ford..isn't one..lol

But I say if you can get the base pay at $9.50...plus the commission...that's great.

I'm sure you might get raises to bump the base pay up...

I guess I'm the only one that views them as BK employees not as high as a manager. Of course I used to work at a car dealership.

It depends on the franchise. General managers make 11 an hour salary. Crew makes 7.35 hourly third assistant (that is me) makes 7.75. Not great pay. My whole idea was to stay there long enough to finish up my second degree. However, they won't work around my schedule anymore. And don't worry brad, I don't take offense to something like that lol.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone.

I worked in the detail shop and it was all commission. The best I ever made was 100/hr we laughed at the salesmen that had to stay there for hours upon hours every week and had to meet customers sometimes at weird hours.

I know that that couldn't have been fun, but I started laughing when I read that (hey, I work at a shitty job too, but Wal-Mart is just about the only place that hires high school kids anymore...)

But, I say GO FOR IT. I don't know what you make now, but really... commission plus those benefits... That sounds like at least it would be fun, ya know. What kind of dealer is it (like, is it Ford or Chrysler, or used or w/e... I think you said used but I can't remember and have to get to h/w soon, so I can't check presently).

One thing to figure out is you base salary you will be making. If you can live with that go for it. 9.50 and hr isn't bad but make sure you find out what the guaranteed hrs a week is. If it's 40 a week then take the job. Any sales will only make you more. Find out how much commission you make. I'd learn those cars inside and out and find ways those cars are better then your competition. Don't be pushy and listen to what the customer wants.

Only downside is car sales are dropping due to the recession we are in.

take the job. i interned at a car dealership duing senior year of high school and it was sweet. i sold a couple cars and didn't get paid the normal commission, but the experience was well worth my time.

and if you can be personable with people, you can sell some cars. it's not hard.

Right now I am making 7.75 an hour. That is as an assistant manager, opening and closing the restaurant, doing maintanance work, keeping track of upwards of 5k a day, and baby sitting the people they hire.

No benefits, no 401k, no vacation, no nothing.

They sell new and used (as in two years old) Buick, Subaru, GMC trucks, pontiac, and a few others. I would have to look at the card again and it is in my coat pocket.

And thanks for the advice John. I do want both the good and the bad sides.

wow, did anyone read this? it's like 9 pages long, took me almost an hour to read, but it gives some real insight into a high pressure, high volume dealership, as well as the "no hassle, no haggle" type of dealership... a good read if you have an hour to waste.

If not an sti, maybe a solstice. Not a huge fan of them, but I think as far as cars go it is a good combination.
