I was wondering if the location of the MAF and other connections mattered that much? I know I probably know this, but as you can tell I am very new at modding. The reason is if the location doesn't matter, just as long as it is getting a good reading than a ram-air style intake is very possible.

They like to be flat. No upright positions. MAFs also get the best readings when in the middle of straight pipes without bends. They will read fairly well with a bend close by, but not as accurately.

Also, the closer the MAF is to the throttle body, the more issues it has reading accurately with sudden changes in throttle position.

I think the position it has for the MMI is about as good as you can get. Far enough from the TB, and far enough from any bends.

Having a lot of pipe between the MAF and TB is common - you never see a MAF on top of the TB on stock cars [anybodys].
The volume/plenum dampens pulsations to smooth the MAF readings.
You don't have to have a ram on the hood - routing it to the front with scoops or funnels would work. Ram air is helpful at high speeds - I wouldn't expect ANY effect until at least 50 mph.

Air mass is a function of a power. Meaning the faster you go, you get exponentially more air. At wide open throttle, the difference is pretty weak though. A properly designed ram air system adds maybe 2 or 3 ponies at about 130 mph. At partial throttle, it will add more, but still, it's not going to help much.
