My laptop is a Gateway, but it also says eMachines on the inside. So I know that its one step above eMachines. (gateway makes them) I hate this damn laptop, but I'm building a top end desktop for around 700 bucks. (quad core, 1066 fsb etc.) Something you cant do with a mac, which is the point. I'll never buy a pre-made computer (except laptops if I were to need a new one). I've been building my own since I was 10, and I switched over to Ubuntu Linux about a year ago and have been very happy with it. Even have it running on my parents computer because it's that easy to use and since it doesn't have any problems like Window's does sometimes for no reason, don't get tech support calls anymore. They aren't tech savvy by any means, and just have it set up to run the things they need, works beautifully.

I've tried out Linux with several different distros and never really go into it. I use Windows because of program compatibility. Show me a decent video editing software that is compatible with Linux...I haven't found one yet... I use Sony Vegas Pro 8 and it's only for Windows. I tried to setup my server using Ubuntu, but that didn't work...you have to use the coding stuff or something, and crap if I know any of that. I never could figure out how to simply share a hard drive and printer over the network, so I gave up and put XP on my server. It's really easy to share stuff on that.

I've also owned an Apple and wasn't really impressed too much to keep it. After the Apple hype came up, I decided I wanted to try out Mac to see if it was all it was said to be. I bought a used iBook G4 with Tiger last September and used it for basic tasks. It wasn't that great to me. Big deal if the chances or getting a virus are slim to none as opposed to Windows. I've been using Windows for as long as I've been using computers and have yet to actually get any big viruses. One was semi-big, but I needed to do reformat of Windows anyway, so I just did that to get rid of it. All the others I have gotten, AVG removed, and I haven't gotten anything at all in like the past 2 years that I know of. So about 2 months ago I sold the iBook to pay for part of my car. I already have a custom desktop w/ 3 LCDs and an HP notebook, so I didn't really use it much.

I will eventually get around to playing with Linux again, but so far I haven't been overly impressed with it as far as ease of use is concerned.

I'll never buy another desktop. Laptops are where its at, and if I MUST have a desktop I will definitely build my own.
I'll never buy another notebook unless I need it. They get slow way too fast. Had my laptop 3 years and I just replaced the slow hard drive and added another gig of RAM to increase performance some. Not to mention the cost. Only upside to a laptop is portability, but how many people get them for that now? I sure didn't when I got mine, it was the "cool" thing of the time to have a laptop over a desktop and I got sucked into that thinking. Only a handful of times has the portability of it been useful. There's a lot more you can do with a desktop if you build it yourself and it will cost so much less than any pre-built or laptop of similar specs (as similar as you can get). And don't be stupid and get a laptop if you want to game on it...the gaming one's are heavy and expensive, and they still don't offer that great of specs. A guy that used to work with me bought a Dell notebook to game on it...he found out it had a geforce 8400...whoopdedoo, that's one lame card.

That's what Wine's for brother, don't have any problems running any of my "Windows" apps on Linux.

Only thing I don't have working right now and am trying to configure the system for right now is so sync with my cell phone which uses Windows Mobile 6, and getting my Infared running so I can transfer my workouts between my Polar watch and my computer. Sure you can say "Well that just shows that it's too complicated", but I'd rather be able to go in there manually and make everything work on my own, that way I know more about the system and how/why it's working.

One thing I know people look down on macs for is the lack of RAM and the inability for expansion. Well I got an Intel Dual Core Mac Mini and a Single core Power Mac G5 both Excellent computers even though they are kinda old. The Mini is capable of running Mac OS 10.5 and Genuine windows Vista , XP and Linux as well. It is also Upgradeable , the upgradeable components are; RAM, Processor,DVD Superdrive, and Hard drive, external upgrades are also very possible. The G5 Upgrades are almost endless except processor  because all of the special sensors used on these machines. Why is RAM so little compared to the competition? Mac OS X requires less RAM and Hard drive space as well than Windows Vista. just a little info.

Well It really depends on what you do with it. I have 2GB on my mini and it works great for everything i do. If your compaq runs XP, XP can run well off of 512, Vista requires 1.6 GB of ram (if i am not mistaken) just to boot up alone. Some vista machines have only 1 GB meaning the person is using VM all the time. guys macs arent that badly priced. I bought one New with my wal-mart wages and I have bills, lots of them.

Umm not complicated at all it is extremely easy to set up and use. When you boot up the mac all you do is press "option" or alt for windows keyboards. then it simply shows the boot options. Click on whichever is needed. Definitely not complicating at all. I learned this all myself, no education on it whatsoever. Setup is no sweat, Press C to boot up and go from there, install them on separate partitions.

I use a PC at home and a Mac Pro at work. the 2 gig of ram in my Mac Pro isnt enough. I have 1 gig in my Compaq laptop and it works great. Really, I love the Mac and wouldn't mind having one at home as well. But I cant afford a Mac. They are extrememly over priced as far as I am concerned.

Exactly. And you can't do anything to change Macs, and after working with Windows forever, I don't feel like learning how to use a completely different OS. Linux is nice, but everyone programs for Windows or Mac. Since Mac costs too much, then it's Windows.

Macs are too expensive for me to ever justify buying one. And like it's been said, they are not open source.

What do you mean you can't do anything to them. They are all PC components now.

Macs aren't hard to use.

Macs aren't hard to use.

It is for someone who has used a different OS all their life. And I still like how everyone writes their programs for Windows, and not so much for Mac.

Bottom line, I don't know a thing about the OS side, I don't know a thing about upgrading them, and again, too expensive to justify buying; especially if you have to go and upgrade every few years (like the current trend is)

that being said, if developers would get their act together and start writing programs for Linux then we should just forget Windows and Mac

Bullshit. If you have even the least bit of brains you can figure it out. I used Windows my whole life until I bought my first Mac in 2004. I had no problems figuring it all out. They have a help part that gets you started.

That still doesn't address the issue that they are way to expensive...

Macs are like Ferraris. fun to play with, but when it comes time to buy you just go with the Toyota instead...

the poll's missing a choice: all answers. depends on what you are doing, what are your needs and your skills. I personally use all of them.

My windows works just fine too, I have no problems using all of my photo editing software or games and no compatibility issues what so ever with anything I use, and yes I used to work on the old macs and hated doing so but then again I haven't used anything since the G4

I hated the old Macs too. I swore I'd never own one. Then, using one in the apple store and having ALL kinds of problems with every machine I have that runs windows, I got a mac. No problems yet, and I had no problems figuring anything out.

Mac.

I have nothing against PeeCees because there are always applications that one will do better at than the other. I have never used Linux before so I cannot comment on it.

It all comes down to personal preference. Frankly, these Mac vs. PeeCee vs. Linux debates are old because there will never be a true resolution. All are superior in their own way.

We have four Macs in our house and I convinced my bosses to let me have one for my job at the state. I just prefer working with them.
