View Full Version : Mechanical oil gauge recommendations

Don't need anything inside the cockpit so I'm going with a mechanical gauge to go in-line with the oil feed line. It's long overdue but I've done nothing but short trips (10 miles or less) for the past two years so I'm doing it for my peace of mind.
Looking at the autometer, some sort of mechanical black face gauge.

So where is this oil feed line ? Are you FI ?

Yeah dude read my signature. I've been on Teamzx2 for like 5 years. It's going from my head, running over the coil pack into the top of my turbo.

..."into the top of my turbo"...?... since the oil feed line, at least on my turbo feed, has a restrictor in it, what will this do to the pressure reading?

Uhhhh, if the gauge is before the restrictor, it will elevate the pressure reading. If after the restrictor, it will be lower. However, the only interest I have is in seeing the amount of pressure the turbo sees, so an after the restrictor gauge is what I'm looking for.

Thank you sir.
I was wondering if anyone had pictures of their setup, I'm pretty much set on the pro comp autometer black faced 0-100 psi gauge, and I'd like to see how everyone mounted theirs.
I dont suggest running a mechanical gauge, running HOT oil to a guage inside the cabin sounds like a big deal to me. If you get a leak, or it started leaking...it could be a nightmare. Spend the extra 50.00 and save yourself (and your interior the hassle later.

It's not going into the interior. It's for under hood only.
then run a psi gauge off the head, I believe its 1/8 fitting. I can get exact thread specs if you give me til sat.

I want to do a T fitting inline with the oil feed line, after my oil restrictor. Tapping the head directly isn't going to give me the reading that I want.
Initially, I tapped directly from the head with no restrictor and the pressure was too high. I blew the turbo. I rebuilt the turbo and put a restrictor but it's not exactly... precise. I want to ensure that my turbo is getting ~20-30 psi.
I'm still interested in knowing the thread pitch and depth but likely it's not going to play a role in my gauge install.

I'm confused with the question, you're asking for a recommendation on a gauge type or where to put it at? If you're just looking for a simple under the hood install, just go on ebay and find a cheap one the color you want and I'd fab a bracket to mount to the coil bracket or something. As for the size tap into the head, its not quite 1/8 but you can make it work.

I was asking what people were using, all I was looking for was an under the hood mechanical gauge. I am doing it inline with the oil feed since I have a restrictor. The pressure from the head is too much and I'm not looking to read it from there.
Got an Autometer Z series gauge in the mail. Got the adapters and setting it up soon hopefully.

I don't know about too much pressure from the head. Maybe when the oil is cold. But once it warms up I get a steady reading of 12psi at idle to 35psi at 4500rpms. I have my oil restrictor on the turbo and the oil line and gauge sensor tapped at the head behind the coil back.
And yes it's not quite 1/8 but you can make it work. I put a washer and thread sealant on the 90* fitting I used to make it work without leaking.
