So I'm kind of hurting for cash right now so I through my crate half stack on craigslist last night for $225. I know it is worth more than that, but Id rather take the money, and I really have no place to play it because of the neighbors. So this kid calls me up and wants to come pick up the amp today. I try it out and make sure everything is in working order, which it was. I dont like doing deals at my house because I dont want to chance some asshole coming over and stealing my shit, so i met him two blocks away at a supermarket. He shows up with his mom, and starts to unload the amp into his car. I ask him if he would like to try it out since there was an outlet on the building and he told me it was alright. So all goes well, he hands me cash, and I'm on my way.
Later on in the day while I was at a job interview, he calls me 4 times and leaves me a voicemail and a few texts saying that the amp doesnt work and he wants his money back or hes calling the cops tonight and bringing me to court. So I say WTF? and call him back. He tells me he took the amp apart, and one of the fuses were blown and a diode is out of place. So I tell him its technically not my problem and he will not get any money back for it. It is blatently obvious that this kid is trying to pull a fast one since he says he works on amps all the time but cant fix this one, and he used to have an amp just like it before.
Is it really that hard to replace a fuse, or solder a diode? No it isnt. He even told me that his record company was going to send out a team of lawyers and cops to my house to get money back LOL.
I can't stand when people try to pull a fast one like this and screw me over. Does he really think I will give him money back or even take a broken amp back? LOL dont think so. So i'd like to see exactly what he does.

Yea thats what I told him on the phone. He also had to borrow money from his mom to pay for it lol. Plus the fact that he opened the case up so then it bacame HIS property. He should have called me as soon as he found out it didnt work right.
i think he might be trying to pull a fast one, he said he had one like it before, right? could it be he still has the old amp and is trying to pass it off as yours? just a thought.

Once he opened the case instead of just calling you back to demonstrate the problem to you it became his responsibility. You should have had him sign a bill of sale with one of the terms disavowing responsibility if the unit is altered or disassembled in any way.
In the future also write the serial number inside the unit, sign it and take a photo. I did this when I had my audio engineering business back in grad school (and I did catch a few dirtbags trying to return broken stuff in place of what I sold them.)

Good advice Jon. I told him this on the phone, that he should have called me before opening it up.
I went to Guitar Center to see if they could look up the serial numbers just to save my ass, but they couldnt go back that far. Even corporate office wasnt able to help me get the numbers

Serial # may not help, who's to say he didn't rip open yours to get the parts that he needed for his. I always treat deals on craigslist as is unless otherwise stated. You did your part, made sure it worked before sale. also offered to test it at time of sale. He knew what he was doing when he bought it. His mother was there to stop him, if he tries to pull the you stole from a child card.

i agree he might be trying to pass of his old (non-working)one as the one you just sold him. If it goes to court, subpeona (sp) his mom she was there when you offered to let him try it and he declined. Lets see if she wants to protect her son and purjure herself or what :)

You did pretty much everything you are required to do. I consider all sales to be final on craigslist, unless I see a return policy  You arent a damn business, you have no obligation. You offered to let him test it out. Why would he take it apart before calling you? And an out of place diode? How exactly does that happen?
I wouldnt even worry about going to court. I had the same thing happen with a cellphone I sold. The guy called me every day for about a week, then finally gave up.

Yea, me personally I think it's hilarious when the kid calls me. He gets so worked up:
Him: My buddy knows his amps, and I have 5 of them so i know when i see a broken amp and when it can be fixed. give me my money back.
Me: theres nothing i can do about it dude, its your property now
Him: well im calling the west warwick police and bringing your ass to court.
Me: Is that so? your going to call the police over somthing that is obviously YOUR problem?
Him: If the police cant do something, then I will do something personally to get my money back. If you dont beleive me, then you can talk to my lawyers or my record label can deal with your ass. Or better yet, I will have my band come down and we can settle this deal face to face.
Me: lol the police cant do anything, you are wasting your time. Its yours, you opened the case instead of calling me, and you want me to give your money back. it doesnt work that way. you have 5 other amps available, use them. and im not going to get involved with your shitty garage band, so kindly pound sand.
Him: fuck you. the cops are going to be there, and they are going to take your ass to jail! By the time we hang up this phone you better agree to give me all of the money back, or you are going to regret it.
Me: do i look like a fucking depatrment store? i dont have a refund policy. It was sold as is, i asked if you wanted to try it out and you said no. it is YOUR problem now, so stop calling me. You arent getting any money back so stop wasting my time and minutes.
Him: I told you to agree to give me money before we hang up, or im calling the cops.
Me: then call the cops because im hanging up right now douchebag.

Next time he calls, tell him you already contacted the police, and they said there was nothing they could do in the matter, and that your attorney advised you that if he wants to contact you, to have his attorney directly contact your attorney. Or that your attorney wants to contact his attorney directly.
Play the game a little bit.

I don't understand why you did not write down the serial number on the bill of sale ?? This is standard business practice. Hiding a sticker with the serial number somewhere inside the case is done by a lot of music and electronic stores that sell used goods.

I always do a bill of sale when the item i am selling is worth it to me. Any vehicle ive sold had a BOS with it, but i dont usually do it for "small ticket" items such as $225. But i probably should start doing that.
delete craiglist ad, block his email, block his number. Done deal.
