View Full Version : Creative use for your stock intake tube

While messing with the car ealier I decided to cut a hole in the panel where the stock baffle went (I now have the ebay CAI yeah). Then I thought...what if I put a tube from the front of the bumper to said hole. Then I looked around the garage for something suitable, and what do I spy-the stock intake I removed.
The hole sets down towards the bottom of the chamber where the old baffle was, and is still lower then the new filter. It is directly behind the stock bumper hole, and I cut it big enough to allow air from both the tube and the bumper hole. the tube fit with the big end at the hole and the the small end stuck in the grill.
Anyways....so far the car seems to like it. I'll try to get pics if I get a chance.:ropenana:
Lame, I know. But there is no external holes in my car and it was free (minus the time it took and 50 cents worth of zip ties).

Dude I can't picture that at all
I'm trying but I'm sure it's way different. I'm interested in seeing pics.

I'll try....but it may be a few days. I have to leave town for a couple days for work tomorrow.
Just think of a hole in the metal where the big box baffle goes. Then picture the intake tube, big end where it hooks to the maf/filter housing pressed up to the metal and zip tied. then the small end where it hooked to the small baffle or pvc pipe (:)) shoved in between the grill parts on the bumper on the left side. Zip tied in place to where it won't move.
It could very well be pointless, since the cut is big enough to allow air from the vent in the bumper as well as the tube. But like I said, so far the car seems to like it so I'll run it for a while....then maybe pull it and see if there is any noticeable difference.

I think I know what you are doing. What did you use to cut it? did you remove the bumper cover?

No I left the bumper on. I used a cutting wheel on a flex shaft to start the hole then took some tin snips to it. It's a little rough but serves the purpose, and isn't really visible from outside the car so.....function over form.

I think I have the same thing done to mine, turns the fender well into a true CAI draw area, it also probably has some bit of a ram air effect.

The fender inlet is already cold air/outside air.
Adding convoluted restrictions to the intake would have no benefit.

Yup something like that....actually exactly like that only the hole turned out a little different.

I don't think the minimal gains from doing that to the intake outway the benefits of good throttle response with a short ram intake. IMO

Im about to do the same thing to my car, except i have the shorter version of the ebay 3" intake. Also im planning on fabbing up a scoop so the air will enter that hole and be directed only to my filter, and have my filter boxed in similar to how the focus has that upper airbox. Im also going to put a mesh screen over the hole so rocks and bigger objects cant get in there.

Yeah I thought about a screen for that.....fall coming means leaves blowing around everywhere.
I need to get it out on the highway and get some open space to see it the tube makes any real difference. I might try that isolation deal next time I'm bored too. What works easily and cheaply? Neoprene or a mudflap from a truck maybe?

I modified my lower resonator housing like that. It looks identical.
In European cars [some version of our car], there was a cold air inlet there. There is a spot for a bolt mount, and a trace of where the round cut out should be.

^I wondered what those were for.

Still no pics, sorry.
I tooke the tube off the front...and it is quieter and a little sadder-so I think the tube helped. I am going to put it back on next time I work on the car (still need to do the rear brakes and bearings, and put the mount back in from the header to the tranny-stupid vibrations) so you can see it. I think it did act like a minor air ram, as well as a resonator for the noise from the intake. I liked the noise.....
