I have 99 zx2 with 150000 miles. My brother was driving my car and it started bogging down. When he parked it, it wouldn't start again. So we just had it towed to a garage and they said the timing belt broke. I thought if your timing belt broke on the zetec motor the car instantly stopped because the motor is non-interference. The garage tried telling me it was interference and said it would be $400 to change the belt. Is it possible for there to be damage done to the motor since it was still running?

your right, the motor is non-interference. $400 to change the belt is a bit too much. wouldnt take no more than a few hours to change it.

since the motor was still runnin, the belt couldnt have been actually "broke", it maybe shredded. if i am not mistaken, if your belt is broke, the vavle train aint working, (valves aint openin and shutin) so you cant bring fuel in, or exhaust out.

When you get the belt done, make sure you get all new pulleys for it at the same time.
A bit more money, but well worth it. The pulleys wear, and may have caused the belt to fail in the first place.
Most shops are unfamiliar with our method of cam timing. The valve cover has to come off, TDC has to be set with a pin or other means, and the cams set with a special flat bar. There is no keyway in the gears/cams. They are infinitely adjustable.
Make sure they know all this first. Not learning and making mistakes on your car, with you paying for it.

If they think the valves are damaged they would charge a hell of a lot more to fix that. There is a how-to in the Knowledge Base if you want to try doing it yourself.
