For those of you who live less than 5 miles, but further than 1 mile away from work or school, do you, or could you walk or ride a bicycle to work? If you have this option, why don't you?

*Was interested to see this compared to commute length*

Do we vote if this doesn't apply? We could do hypothetical.

If I did, and could (I don't own a bike, though I'd like to for the workout) I would totally do it.

I used to from time to time at a couple of my old jobs.. once when i was 16 I would walk to work cuz it was only like half a mile.. id walk most days.. and I rode my bike a LOT when i was working at the Porsche Jaguar dealer.. got alotta strange looks.. workin there riding a bike or driving a zx2..lol.. o well.. it was only like 2-3 miles depending on traffic what ever way you went.. I wish I lived closer to work now.. I could use the exercise..

Definitely bicycle in good weather, if for no other reason than exercise.

I work like 6-7 miles from work so it's close enough. I voted for ride and save gas but I don't because it is late at night that I have to work. Plus I don't want to leave my 600 dollar bike outside, it will get oily if I leave it inside. Not to mention my oily ass cloths.

I've got a 7 mile ride to school, but it involves either riding on busy roads or roads with no shoulders, or going an extra 2-3 miles out of the way to get their safely. 2 pretty large hills would slow my pace as well.

All said and done I've estimated it would take me about an hour or a little more, and i'd most definitely need a shower.

Now that doesn't bother me much, except I've got my first class at 9am. So that means I'd be leaving at around 6am to be safe, which means waking up at around 5am. Which having 18 credits and work till 5:30pm, just doesn't jive well.

It would also include a change of clothes as well as books and other things on the bike.

I then would have to ride 5 miles to work at 1pm in the afternoon. This wouldn't be a tough ride, as mostly level and easy back roads to get there, but would involve two heavy traffic road crossings that would be pretty dangerous. I'd also have no time to eat before work, and then I'd have to ride home or back to school and get my car.

So basically, if I could, I would, but it just doesn't work very well in my situation. I think I would ride to work if I lived less than 3 miles away and it was a fairly flat track.

Ideally I'd like to a career where I could live close to work, not have to be there till 9am, and they'd have single showers there. That's a bit of a stretch though.

I live about 3.5 miles away from my work, but I drive. Not anything to do with wanting to drive, but I am in sales. Presentation means a lot in sales, I don't want to go to work looking sweaty and smelling. It's not like I can change once I get there either, its a 15'x10' kiosk, so I dont think the surrounding merchants/customers would like to see that haha.

Im to lazy to walk or ride a bike to work. plus i wake up for work and im tired, i don't feel like falling asleep behind the handbars of my bicyle. I work like 5 miles from my house, maybe less, but its not safe to ride there. exspecially because i work on an industrail road with MANY cars and MANY tractor trailors. There aren't any side walks 93% of my commute.

I live ~5 miles from work. I would not consider anything but driving. FL is way too hot and way too humid to be outside walking to work. I'd be covered it sweat and be lucky if I didn't dehydrate lol.

If you are only going 1-5 miles to work, you aren't racking up the mileage anyways and your gas will be cheap. I pay about $80/mo in my 350z (93o) including all city driving and going to/from work.

It takes me about 1/2 of a shift to make $80. Who wouldn't trade 4 hours of work for enough gas to drive all month? That's less than a lot of people's cell phone bills :).

I'd love to be able to ride my bike to work but it's just a little to far.

if the commute is a mile or less, i'd walk. up to 5 miles, i'd ride my bike, depending on the terrain though. don't need to get to work looking like i need a shower.

all of this is, of course, dependent upon the weather. :)

I'de ride a bike if I lived within 5 miles of work...

I've been known to ride my bike to work anyway (work is 17 miles from where I live).

Saturday night I had to walk home from work (the timing belt idler popped off the car) my legs still hurt. The repair is going well, except for the fact that I broke a valve cover bolt!.

Well my job is three miles from my house and if it were all flat land I'd totally ride my bike, but to work its all down hill and i get off work at nine so I'd be waaaaay to tired to ride up a big ass hill, so i drive.

My school is 5 miles away and I drive, but that's because I don't like biking (esp. when it's 10 degrees and snow on the ground) and some of the roads I have to travel are too dangerous to bike on.

I would ride but I have to go through a bad hood to get to work/school. Some guy here in town bought a bike and the first day riding it to work got shot :-/
