View Full Version : So... the car company called.
The car company called; said I couldn't get a pre-owned car. I however do work for a first-time buyers program. But i have to buy a brand new car. So i guess i'm looking for a good sporty car, brand new. Under 17,000k? Any ideas?

Scion tC.
The first type buyer program is going to rape you with APR.
Its all i was qualified for. Thats UBER gay; Because i have a 650 Credit score, which is great for being 18 I hear. But with nothing down, and a zx2 trade. Well yea. I have an Apointment at 2:15PM with the dealership. We're gonna see what they're offering; If they give me a really crappy car I don't like, i'll just save up and get something better soon. (I hope.)

Honestly id say just keep the zx2 till your done with school. You wont want car payments and shiz. Trust me, having a paid off car, and even if it may be beat down, as long as its still running your going to be money ahead.

Your income generally determines the amount you can afford, not your credit score. Your credit score will get you a lower rate though.

im super curious as to what company this is. whereas that 650 credit score is alright, your lack of credit hx might be the hold up with that. aside from that, your monthly payment could very easily be similar in a new or used situation. i know that some finance companies are less likely to finance a used car in certain situations because they feel safer financing a car with a manufacturers warranty, but you can get an extended dealer warranty on any car that you buy. as someone mentioned before, i would stay away from any first time buyers program and find yourself a new finance company. have you checked with your credit union or bank? thats generally where the ftb finds the best deal

different people have different priorities.
Personally I can afford a new car payment but the zx2 is running good so i keep driving it even tho id prefer a new civic ten fold, id prefer no payments 20 fold lol. once I get outta school next year I'm sure I will get something new with a payment but since money is tight im fine with the 11 year old pos escort lol.

lancer evo (i hate car payments and high insurance $300 $385 respectivly)
Firstly i'm not in school; i work 80+ Hours a week. As for a running car, my zx2 would be nice; and i would keep it, however. The tranny is going bad, the breaks are going out, the serpentine belt is gone, the engine has 140K miles on it. The clutch will be going soon aswell; as theres no feeling or pressure in it. Also; the radio barely works, the hvac system doesn't work, thus no defrost, heater, or a/c.
Just an FYI as to why i want a new car. I'm happy with a cobalt, it seems theres an O/K aftermarket life for it. Plus the car seems to be pretty decent quality.
FYI: the cobalt is what i'm approved for.

cobalt is a decent car however honda does have a first time buyer program too and a civic is better than a cobalt on any level. you can sell a civic in two years and not lose your ass on it a cobalt you can't.
good luck.

New cars are bad news. Plan on losing at the very least 2k right off the bat. That being the case, buy a tC like vit said. They won't screw you over immediately after driving it off the lot.

So, they were gonna put me into a Chevy Aveo; pissed me off. The dealer was pressureing me into a chevy aveo. Hes one of those annoying say everything 3 times guys, and he always tries to talk me into something. I got them to get me a cobalt; then I looked at the cobalt they were giving me.
Its F'Ed up, they are gonna give me a 15,000$ Chevy Cobalt, and when fees and all were done it was gonna be 17K. It drove funny, the transmission felt really funny, and it studdard a couple times. Plus it didn't have power anything (Door Locks, Windows, not even mirrors!). So heres whats F'Ed up; but i understand why.
There gonna give me a 17,000$ car; with a 400$ monthly payment. But the car I really wanted, a 2004 Tiburon, for 8,000$ they wont let me have. (Its because no other bank will touch me, but the GMAC First Time buyer program will, but it has to be an 08 GM). I may 2000$ a month, with 300$ in bills a month! I also have a credit score of 650; I'm only 18. Not a bad start.
But it just stucks, so i'm gonna suck it up for a few months and save up a few grand and get a car I want. Maybe a Loaded Cobalt Sport/SS; Or a Tiburon/Celica.

Since you can obviously support yourself, why not get a co-signer for a used car loan? That seems like the best solution to me..

lol when I bought my zx2 new, my insurance was $100 more than my payments.

did that i have the best credit in my family; they make me less-likely to get approved.

Thus why I told ya first to just drive your beater suck it up, get a few credit cards. BE SMART WITH THEM!!!!! (best way to build your credit) and then after a year or two you will be good to go. Trust me a new car sounds great, but once your stuck it payment land its not so much fun.

You work 80+ hours a week and only make $2000 a month?
Anywho, I had a year lease on a 2006 Cobalt SS and that was 9 months too long for me. They are a POS! The interior is so cheaply done, not to mention all the other lil crappy things Chevy skimped on to make the car. IMO, stay away from the Cobalt. It ultimately is your decision.
Don't let ANY salesman pressure you. That shit makes me nuts. They see a young person, or a female, and it's open season for them. They KNOW they're gonna make out like fat rats from your purchase of a vehicle and they can smell money from a mile away.

Car salesmen think I'm a b*tch! My hubby actually told me that I have to go with him because otherwise they sucker him. Not me though. But I do feel suckered on his damn SUV! Never buy a vehicle the first year it's made, or better yet stay away from Chevy! (Unless it's a Classic.) I had to learn that the hard way.

I have the credit cards, and credit man. Just gets me a score; doesn't show any "established" credit.
IMO the cobalt has potential; if the interior was made out of more expensive/better materials. Its just 17 Grand for a car like the cobalt; that in 6 months is gonna be worth 6,000$. No thank you; I feel like not loosing my ass on a car I do not want.
My salesman is annoying; I want the last 3 days of my life back.

Trust me, you do have "established" credit. If you have had them for at least a year, made your payments on time, then you have established yourself. That's what my oldest son did, and his credit score jumped up to 750 in no time. DO NOT under any circumstances get yourself stuck into a new car situation at your age. I was career military and too many times saw guys your age (with some $$ in the pocket) get raped bigtime by big ticket purchases. Your financing problem is that you seem to be relying on the dealer to help you get it. Do it yourself. Hit up the banks and credit unions. You may surprise yourself. Get pre-approved for a loan amount, which will give you more buying power.
Good luck.

Cuz they need a decent sport compact. If they did it right people would definitely buy it. But I can respect the fact that they are going more enviromentally healthy. I guess I'm 2 sided about it haha

fact. in my experience selling cars, it was sooooooooooooo easy getting young kids to buy stuff they didnt even know they wanted to buy just because they were clueless and didnt do the work themselves. go talk to the bank or credit union, i think i covered this n the first page of this thread, find some adds with some pricing on them, and do your homework. it will be totally worth it in the end.

I'm the witch too.. except I had a really great experience at Chevy! When we got our Trailblazer I walked in expecting a fight. I had done my research and knew what I could get the car for elsewhere and I told the guy and he said, no problem, pretty much matched it which took 4K off the price on the window. We were in and out of there in a little over an hour....

sounds like you made the right decision. Dont let people pressure you into somethign you dont want. Try a credit union, they may give you an auto loan and that enables you to go into the bank with a check. This shits the leverage to your side.
I think I may open a bank account at a credit union, and see what I can do after i've had some money in there a while. My primary bank is wells fargo; but when i say them a few months ago they couldn't help me. But I didn't have a 650 score then; so we'll see. As for the credit cards, its been approx 6 and 9 months on them. But I also have 2 cell phone bills that haven't showed up on my credit report yet.
