Yesterday, I was on my way to Blue Springs from Warrensburg. And I wrecked... no... totaled my car. I will explain what happend:
I would assume that everyone knows the feelings that one gets when something bad is about to happen. Well, my feelings came around 3:00 PM before I left for B.S. I don't know what caused me to go on with my plans, but just know that I did anyway... obviously.
Anyway, my cruise control was set on 67-69 mph (veries with the hills involved), and was in the passing lane, passing a slower car.
Ahead of me was a 1993 John Deere 9500 series combine on the right shoulder going however fast combines can handle. As I began to complete my pass, the combine began to turn left onto a gravel road that was on the other side of the highway (it's difficult to explaine this if one does not know the geography of this area). The "intersection" was US 50 and NW 175 road.
I realized at that point that he was going to cross my path and that the car on my right side was too close for me to pass at this point.
At this point, I slammed on the brakes and horn- to warn the driver that I would hit him (like he could have heard me over the engine). My tires locked up and of course had no steering. Just before I hit the combine, I distinctly remember saying to myself-"Limp... go limp."
The reason for this was due to that fact that in many accidents, drunks (I WAS NOT, by the way) typically walk away from serious accidents due to the "limp body and unawarness approach." So, at this point, I just accepted the car will be destroyed and I will not... I wouldn't allow it.
I slammed into the combine at maybe around 50 mph infront of the left rear tire. My airbags deployed and I stopped...
At this point the combine drove a couple feet onto the median and stopped. I checked over myself and got out of the car when it was safe. The right-front of the zx2 was destroyed, everything was pushed into the engine, and the windshield was cracked. The combine... not a scratch.
I had one witness at the scene. He was very polite and of course leaned my way when it came to the statement-- which is true. The driver of the combine had this to say to me when I got out "I did not see any cars comming when I made the turn, and I had my turn signal on." (Reminder- he was in the right shoulder before beginning the turn on a 2 lane highway).
I am still a little shaken up from this, and my car has suffered the severity of the crash... Thank God. Thank you for your support and... everything. I will be awaiting the call from the insurance on Monday concerning payment for the 2002 Ford Escort ZX2 i.e. Silverfrost.
I will be posting pictures when they are available.
