i just figured out all the classes i need from now til Spring of 2011...when i should be ready to apply to Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville for a 4 year PharmD program. it's going to be insane to have a full time 3rd shift job and a family while taking on college full time. most of these classes are only offered around noon, it seems....so that's going to mess up my schedule...especially if i have to travel for work or get put on 1st shift often :(

it goes as such:

Spring '09:

3 credits of College Algebra
4 credits of General Zoology
3 credits of English Composition 1
3 credits of Philosophy

Summer '09 (will only let me take 9 hours):

3 credits of Trig
3 credits of English Comp 2
3 credits of Economics

Fall '09:

5 credits of Precalculus
4 credits of Principals of Human Anatomy and Physiology 1
4 credits of General Chemistry

Spring '10:

5 credits of Calculus
4 credits of Principals of Human Anatomy and Physiology 2
4 credits of General Chemistry

Summer of '10:

4 credits of General Botony..(hoping to get a waiver for 10 credit hours in the summer)
3 credits of Humanities
3 credits of Sociology

Fall of '10:

4 credits of Bioprincipals 1
4 credits of Organic Chemistry
4 credits of General Physics

Spring of '11:

4 credits of Bioprincipals 2
4 credits of Organic Chemistry
4 credits of General Physics

all in all....84 credit hours for Pre-Pharmacy.

the other thing about it....Illinois Central College's pre-pharm program is different than these classes...and basically you have to get dept. permission to attend a few of those classes if you aren't in the program...but i have to chose between SIUE and UIC (university of Illinois Chicago) in order to get my IL veteran's grant (4 years of paid tuition)...so i'm going my own route and taking all the classes SIUE recommends.

Damn, good planning. I wish I could have done that, but the school I went to for my CS/Math degrees you were lucky to have the next semesters schedule by about halfway through the preceding semester. Made schedule time a little hectic trying to get it figured out so you can register and crap.

It's a good plan.

To succeed at the graduate level you need a solid undergrad education plus good organizational skills and a well defined goal. It sounds like you are well on the way to having all of them.

The difference between someone with ability who hasn't succeeded in life vs. someone who has succeeded and has move farther on is usually discipline and determination.

It also helps to have a spouse who is committed to helping you long term so both of you are on the same page. Work out all the details with your wife to avoid conflicts when you are halfway through the plan.

they wont let you take more than 9 hours in the summer (which is why i hope they will give me a waiver for the 10 hours one summer). i guess 12 is full time for Fall/Spring...but 9 is full time for summer.

yeah, my wife is on the same page. she's going to school full time for Radiography..then possibly moving on to Sonography if we can find a program. we were going to just have me work for a couple years while she went to school...then her get a job, and i'd go to school for 6 years. but the way things are going, i want to get out of this area as soon as i can. i'm hoping she'll be ready to find a good job around the time i'm applying for colleges. (like i said SIUE or UIC). at least i won't have to work during the pharmacy program (except clinicals, internships, ect.).

with me taking on a full class load while working full time...when i go to the PharmD program, it'll seem a bit easier because i'll have more time....so i'm hitting it hard purposefully to make the program that much easier to do.

also..did i mention i'm coming away from this with $0 in student loans? right now, i'm getting 90% of my tuition covered from Caterpillar (since my classes at ICC are similar enough to an EE degree in their eyes, that's what they think i'm doing). so 2 years of only paying 10% at a junior college...which i can easily pay for. then, when i got for my 4 years at SIUE (i'm hoping for that one over UIC)...i'm going to double dip. i'll be getting 4 years of tuition free via the Illinois Veteran's Grant....and all my Montgomery GI Bill benefits. so i'll be making money off my grants...and my wife will be working. i'll also be filling out FASFA soon so i can see what other scholarships or grants i'm eligable for. if i can swing it...i'll work at Cat til all my debt is paid off...then live off of grants/scholarships if i can...that'll give me much more time for studying.
