My 99 has a serious issue with the paint flaking from the doorjam at the bottom corner. Has anyone else had this happen? What kind of steps can I take to clean this up so i don't have bare disgusting looking metal showing.

sounds like over baked e-coat.... or under baked..... what can you do..... paint it, you don't want bare metal or it will rust out on you

Is it flaking from rust under the paint?
You have to dig deep and kill the rust, and perform whatever body work is then necessary.

not rust at all. it looks like bare metal under it. what would be the best way to get things patched over. I mean, there are touch-up kits with primer and paint. what's the best course to "patch" things and have it still look good.

That is unusual. There is a reason the paint lifted off.
Is so, Duplicolor primer, paint, and maybe clearcoat afterwards will work.
Making the substrate clean and even is up to you. If it is in side the doorjamb, where no one sees it, just get it so it doesn't rust - you don't need great bodywork.

Is it the outside rear corner? I've seen this on TONS of ZX2s. Even my S/R did it with the OEM plastic mudflaps.

If it's the bottom corner where the metal bends to go into the door jam on the outside of the car, it's caused by the shape of the car. Every ZX2 I've seen has the paint wearing off in the bottom corners of the door jam (Mine has a wings west kit on it and it's still having this happen). Only way I know of to fix it is to re-paint, then apply some type of clear laminate to protect the paint from abraision from small particals in the air.

Our lower panel paint is some sort of special textured rubber flex paint. It must not adhere well in some cases.

The textuized area stops just around this corner. That is 1 of the problems. The other problem is how the bottom and rear corner of the door is in farther than the rocker. Instead of rocks just sliding along the car, they get "caught" in the corner highlighted below causing the paint to chip. My S/R had a few metal spots. My dad took it to the dealer in 03 to get that looked at. What did Ford do? Say its normal and goop on some touch up paint which chiped out even quicker.
