I've sold nearly 30 of these and you are the second person to get one broken like that. I had to send 3 to the first guy because they kept breaking them. They suck. Just Pay Pal me $4 and I'll mail you another one.

Okay, so I finally got around to doing my timing belt this last weekend. When I got my timing cover and splash guard off I instantly saw the reason for the belt breaking, my top-right (Timing bearing?) had exploded into a million pieces. So I went ahead and bought a new one of those and a crankshaft gear. I got it all installed, got it in perfect time first try, (Thanks jrqf! I was having a hell of a time finding something to use as a cam alignment tool. +rep for you!), but after just a day my timing belt is walking off the gears and starting to shred along the side. I can't figure out why, I do have a 1998, but I replaced the lower crankshaft gear with the single piece one, and everything is all good and tight (Giggity).
Any ideas?

Yup, a wonderful idea:
You have to replace all your pulleys, they are likely all bad. Do that and it should stay on like normal![]()

Make sure the belt's not TOOO tight, too.You want a little deflection or the belt can distort the idler(s)/ tensioner and cause the belt to walk. If you didn't use a Ford/Gates belt, that can cause it to go for a walk, too.
Quick question. How many pre '98 owners have replaced the 2 piece crank sprocket with the new ford 1 piece design? How big a problem was it causing? I couldnt find much online about it. I have to do my timing belt and the extra $30 for the crank sprocket adds up, especially for a car im only keeping for another year or two.
I chose NOT to replace my crank sprocket.. I saw NO reason to.. the original unit has lasted 126,000 miles and the integrity of the unit to me is proven.. I suspect but have no data to prove that perhaps many people change this part and maybe do not get it into the exact position of the stock piece and MAYBE that is what is causing this "belt walking".. Mine went perfectly.. I changed ALL idler and tension pulleys but all toothed sprockets were kept original.. I cannot argue with success.
BTW.. I BOUGHT a new 1 pc crank sprocket and returned it. When laying under the car at the moment of truth.. having read all the stories.. and seeing my perfectly good original part staring me in the face.. I had a moment of divine conversation with God.. and he said.. "Dude.. if it ain't broke.. don't fix it." God rocks!
He flooded the earth too.
But I agree God rocks.
FORD ZX2 FTW!!!!!
