Timing Belt

The Integra I put a new belt on had two little holes drilled in the head and in the cam. You put a certain size metal rod (I used drill bits) to hold the cams in position.

My concern is that the cam gear might move relative to the cam shaft.

Those bolts are tightend down to 60 and 80 ft-lbs. The gear is not going to slip.

so quick questoin for u guys, i read in the fourms that our engines are non-interference, yet the hanes manuals and napa and mechanics i talk to say we have an interference engine.... which is it?

ZX2 engines ARE non-interference.

Will not resetting the VCT cause rough idle after a setting up the timing (twice)???....btw ZX2Fast, great write up, it was easy with your help!!

You should only have to reset the VCT if the belt broke while the engine was running.

Rough idle can also be caused by improperly seated spark plug wires. You should hear them click into place when you push them down over the plugs.

hey, zx2fast! can the timing belt pulley leave it's imprint (smooth to the touch) on the back of the crank pulley?(stock) thank you!

p.s. zx2fast, one more question. you've mentioned in some other thread that a t-belt can rub on the back of the crank pulley. that's my condition right now. how bad is it in the long term? thank you!

What size is bit do i need to get that vct gear off, I noticed that a t55 takes the intake and the vct cover off but looks like a reverse torx inside the vct housing...... wheres the easy button when ya need it.....lol

The belt will wear against the back of the crank pulley. If it is severe, it'll eat the edge of the belt up and can lead to belt failure. It is much worse with aluminum UDP's because it is softer and the belt eats it.

The bolt holding the VCT hub is an 'E' bit, reverse torx. A 16 mm socket always works for me.

I am having some problems here. I am not a complete newb. I have replaced a couple timing belts in Hondas and also two in BP-motor Escort GT/Mercury Tracer LTS cars, very similar to my 1998 ZX2.

I can't seem to figure out how to remove the middle timing cover, the one with the accessory belt pulley mounted onto it. I have two bolts out and it won't wiggle or anything. I can't get to the third bolt because the pulley on the cover is blocking me from getting any tools in there.

Any ideas?

There is no need to remove that cover to do the timing belt. If the pulley is blocking you, remove the pulley.

zx2fast timing is all set, I appreciate the help, hey just to throw it out there the reverse torx bolt can also be tightened/loosened by a 5/8" socket too (couldn't find the right tool), it worked great and fit tight no play to strip the bolt. Now I'm getting a p1506 so i have to check all my lines and PVC. Hey Zx2fast is there anything special i need to do for the pvc on a turbo, I have it routed differently (not stock) but I just wanted to get your opinion......

I just vented my PCV and used the nipple on the intake manni for my boost gauge.

U can use a screw driver to hold the cam in place. U really dont need to put the cover back on. Cuz when we did mine we use a screw driver to hold it in place. An i work good. U can go to the auto zone website. it shows u how to change a timing belt. The best timing belt use is a gates belt, if u can find the kit that would be even better

You do realize you posted that link in a thread that shows exactly how to set the timing on this car along wtih the TSB for preventing belt walking, right?
