Video how-to done. Selling disc on Ebay so I can try to recover some cash to pay bills I put off. Just search Ebay for it or check the Ebay section of this site.
Disc covers timing belt, timing pullies, VCT gear delete, and front oil seal replacement. I also demonstrate exactly why this engine is non-interference. I even include a very dramatic demo. I film me turning the crank and cams around with the belt off.

Nope. Guess they figure $12 plus shipping is too much to pay to save $700 in labor.

post a link to the ebay auction. I'm in a buying mood.

I'm currently stuck in Lexington KY (visited the girlfriend on her birthday) having Midas do this exact job. The mechanic quoted me 700 bucks at first then asked for another 100 bucks. After paying and leaving the parking lor, I pulled back into the shop after making the block. The stuttering and quirky accelerating of the car was not fixed. He then proceeded to say it was the coil pack, $100 later he replaces the coil pack and still the same juttering. He checks the spark plugs and one the spark plugs and breaks off one of the plugs in the block. ... What a great day. I'm here till Monday. At least I'm with my woman. :-)
Too bad you didn't find this sooner. That sucks. It sounds like he didn't set the timing right. Ask him to prove his 'guesses' as to what the issue is instead of just replacing random parts. You do not have to pay him to make guesses about your car and to learn how to set timing on a Zetec.

ZX2FAST DVD review-
Worth the small amount he is asking to make a first-timer feel more secure doing the TB, idler pulley changeout. Added bonus footage/instructions on VCT delete and crank(oil pump) seal which I guarantee is oozing on most everyone's ZX2.
List of Ford part #'s needed included.
Only area that was by nature difficult to show was the tensioner adjustment..6 mm Allen , socket, hand, head in way a bit along with difficulty in getting light to that area. My suggestion here which I tested was to get a 6" by 4" mirror angled/secured to reflect light right down toward the tensioner and shot pictures via the mirror..somewhat clearer shot, albeit reversed perspective, and certainly much brighter.
All in all, highly recommend and hope all Forum users/regular would consider supporting ZX2FAST's work here so he can be encouraged to produce other DVD's. Excellent point, unknown to me, was his demonstration that the top TDC peg use, at least in his Zetec, was not even close to acheiving real piston #1 TDC.
Thanks for the review. I'm glad the post office didn't break it.

should the belt be snug around all the way around or is it supposed to have slack inbetween the tensioner and the lower crank gear?
starting shit is a hoe ass gigantic ass pussy ass bad kind of pussy shit that you dont bring up because im a crazy cool guy until you bring up that hoe ass gigantic ass pussy ass shit.... just saying tho!!!
It is going to have slack between each gear or pulley. The longer the travel between them, the more slack.
