Working at a hobby shop helps the model railroading (employee discount), and we do repairs.... I get to see the new stuff before it goes on the shelves, and the pre-wwII, early post-wwII Lionel and American Flyer trains people occasionally bring in for service or sell back to us are really interesting too. It's surprising how early Lionel had reversing units in their A/C powered model trains and how early American Flyer trains actually made Chuging sounds, like the new sound equipped model trains do.

Sometimes, you don't get there in time. On February 2nd, 2011, Amtrak demolished the ex-PRR freight depot at Gap, PA. The building had been vacant for years, and a tree was growing out from within the depot through a caved in section of the roof. The depot dated back to 1884, but hadn't seen any railroad use in probably 4 decades.

I read a small article in the local newspaper about the demolition, and headed over right after work. This is what I found:

Well, someone got to it. That small bare wood spot to the right of the window was the location of green backing/white lettering signs in Penn Central font that simply said 'LEAMAN'. The sign was missing from the other side as well.

    More to come.

There's a new 4-4-0 Steam Engine on the tracks....

It was delivered to "Steam into History" on 5/21/2013 at a construction cost of $1.5 Million.

It starts passenger service June 2nd 2013 from New Freedom Pa to Glenrock Pa, and By the 150th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address will be running from New Freedom PA to Hanover Junction PA. The Hanover Junction Train Station was the Telegraph relay point between New York and Washington DC at the Time of the Cival War. and "Honest Abe" Lincoln stayed in the Hanover Junction Train Station during his campaign to become President, then again on the way to give the Gettysburg Address. His body laid "in state" at the station for three days on it's way to where he is buried.

Glad to see some are still posting in this thread. I finally remembered my password for this site, so I'm back.

Unfortunately, my posts here have been edited. More than once, someone else has posted pictures taken from this thread on Facebook pages without giving me proper credit, so all the picture settings have been placed to private and, in many cases, the links have been removed altogether. I'm sorry it came to this, but seeing someone else post your work as their own isn't a comforting feeling.

I'm still railfanning with my trusty Nikon D70. David Gettle... I'll be getting in touch with you via PM as I'm an avid HO scaler now and travel down to the shows in Timonium often (and stop by Steam Into History when I'm down there).

Paul01ZX2... nice shots of that NW2, do you mind sharing when you took those? Last disposition of that unit I've seen was scrapped/2011; perhaps that isn't correct.

Awesome, my shop should be opening in the next week or two, just have to get two fire extinguishers, and two outdoor emergency lights (per building inspector). I have some used HO scale rolling stock in the store, and am a Lionel, American Flyer, Bachmann and Broadway Limited dealer (have to get that application sent in to Mike's Train House)

I live just about two minutes from a Union Pacific Yard and a Kansas City Southern Yard! I'm a lucky Railfan! If I drive about another three minutes I am at a Norfolk Southern Yard. OH! and right in there is Mid-America Car Inc. You never know WHAT you will see there (Not long ago they had a couple of Rock Island Rocket locomotives). Some of my wife's family worked for Kansas City Southern so I model that and Union Pacific in n scale.

I'm even luckier, I own a hobby shop (opened last month) that's 300 feet away from http://www.steamintohistory.com (and they occasionally let me ride for free!!!!) The train just pulled out half an hour ago, and will be back about 4pm . I can take photos of the train without even going in front of my counter!
