    A slushy for Christmas - 2000zx2chik

    Default Anyone here a railfan?

I've been one as far back as I can remember. For only having my D70 for about a month, I'm well on my way to having 1000+ pics of various railroad stations & rolling stock that I've taken. I try to find the rare/old/oddball pieces, and I've had some success in that arena, but here's a few shots of what I've taken already....

A fairly old Caboose [build date 12/41... as in 1941]. I was concerned more with the paint scheme than the age of the caboose, B&O [Baltimore & Ohio] Chessie System!

A distant shot, with the old Cressona Station in the background. This is in the Cressona Yard, owned by the Reading & Northern Railroad.

One of my favorite 1st Generation EMDs, the FP7; all the better in Reading Company scheme. These were taken at the Rail Road Museum of PA in Strasburg.

A pair of RDG FP7s, 'Old Rivets' behind them [the first GG-1 built] and an Amtrak E60CH.

Another shot of the RDG FP7A combo. These units are still semi-active.

    GG-1, E60CH and FP7 sitting together.

My favorite electric locomotive of all time, the GG-1. This was the first one ever built, Number 4800 [originally 4899]. Sadly, due to the PCBs in the cooling fluid for the transformers, I'll never see a GG-1 move under its own power [even though the last one was retired in 1983].

Inside the museum, they have #4935 on display. Just to give you an idea of their size, their length is 79ft.

I took a ride on the Strasburg Railroad with my girl the same day we were at the museum. Here's one shot in particular that I liked.

Now to an oddball I found at the Norfolk Southern yard in Northumberland. It's a HH GP38-2.

Emissions Plate from the previous EMD.

The North Shore Railroad out of Northumberland had three SW switchers parked in this portion of the yard. While the last one was all black with white numbers/letters, these other two are in their previous Lackawana schemes. NSRR's main building is in an old Lackawana station.

Just an old passenger coach, but a closer look shows.....

Penn Central. From what I've heard old railroaders say, PC was a disaster for the two railroads that merged, the Pennsylvania RR and New York Central.

Final shot; sunset at the Amtrak grade crossing at Eby Chiques Road in Mount Joy Township. Tracks on the right go West [Harrisburg] and the tracks on the Left go East [Lancaster, Phily].

Camera info: Nikon D70, 18mm-70mm lens, pics taken in high quality JPEG mode [1504x1000], no tripod.

I've chased trains since the 50's , there was a freight yard a block away where I grew-up , Lincoln yard on the south side of Detroit . I have tons of Pennsy pic's of steam , diesel and buildings . I've belonged to the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society since ' 68 when the Pennsy went out of business to become the Penn Central . Been to Strasburg a few times and Horse Curve .Your lucky to be up around the old PRR corridor . Excellent pic's ,amazing what today's camera's can do and use no film .

I also model the PRR in HO , now I just build to sell on Ebay and show's . Took the layout down to have more room for cars . The hobby got so bad I opened a train shop on the east side of Indy in the '80's . I sold the business and moved to Florida , no train's where I'm at , just some junk geep 7's -9's . The business is still going under the name of Train Central .

I'll dig up some pic's and post them , some are BW and old color . There's not a lot to chase down here , have to go up around Tampa and JAX .

That would seriously be awesome John! I had planned to get out to the Horseshoe Curve, but I was called back to work 2 days prior [I had been on temporary layoff].

There are some other GG-1s I want to photograph, namely #4876 outside of Baltimore [near the B&O museum]. That was the GG-1 that crashed into Washington Terminal when the brakes on the last 13 railcars of the Federal Express it was pulling failed. It ended up going through the floor and into the basement. That one was cut into 3 pieces for removal, shipped back to the Altoona Shops, and rebuilt. From pics I've seen of 4876, it's in deplorable condition, rotting away and stained with graffiti. Roughly 16 GG-1s survive today; 139 were built from 1934-1943.

I also thought of boarding an Amtrak at the Lancaster Station and going to Harrisburg Station, so I can shoot a few pics of 4959, which sits at the Harrisburg Transportation Center. It's only $16 round trip on Amtrak.

    Speaking of the Lancaster Station.....

    The view from McGovern Avenue.

The top of the steps, looking towards Lancaster City.

    The large skylight window.

I'm a stickler for just about anything Pennsy!

A view from the walkover to the Westbound Platform. This is looking towards Philly.

    Down to the Eastbound Platform.

    A Westbound commuter train arriving.....

... and leaving, with an AEM-7 bringing up the rear..

    And of course, Cork Tower.

if you want to even better pics you need to shoot in raw mode. and be prepared to have a high volume sd card. raws are 5-10mb a piece. also you should use photoshop to edit them, and use http://flickr.com

    photobucket hacks the quality.

nice pics, my dad was on the railroad for ever

nice pics. my grandad was an engineer for CSX for 40 years, so i've seen my fair share of trains. definitely learned to appreciate them beyond the kid stage of "look how big they are."

I did shoot in raw mode when I went to the Reading Company Transportation & Historical Society, but the files aren't viewable in windows for some odd reason, even after dl'ing the Nikon PictureProject. I can only open them in that program. The size was a tad large anyway.

Not yet, but I plan to. I really want to see T-1 #2124, one of four T-1s [4-8-4 Northern steam locomotives] left in existence. Another T-1 local to me is ex-Reading Company 2102, located at Reading & Northern's Headquarters in Port Clinton, PA

    Thanks for the comments guys.
