Default Underdrive Pulley Comparison / Powder Pulley Review

Well, I got a Powder pulley. We used to have an Esslinger on the car, but you can't go wrong with an even smaller pulley. Matt (Powder) sells them on the site during group buys http://www.teamzx2.com/forumdisplay.php?f=54, for $85 shipped with the belt. On to the comparison!

First off, weight. The Powder pulley weighs just a tiny bit more than the Esslinger. They did a pretty good job making the Esslinger pulley extremely light. It's has spokes instead of a solid piece. Both pieces are quality no doubt. Obviously, the Powder pulley is a whole lot smaller, so that's always good.

    Now pictures!
Here the three are laid out next to each other:

    Angled shot:

    On top of each other:

    Side by side:

You can see both are a lot smaller than stock. The Powder pulley fits inside of the stock one, which kind of blew my mind. The stock pulley is just plain heavy and huge.

Here are the three installed on the cars:

    Stock:

    Esslinger:

    Powder:

    Driving impressions...

I took it out for a quick spin today. So far, the idle seems to be a bit smoother. Also, the RPMs drop a bit faster when shifting between gears (I was pretty happy about that). I definitely felt a little bit of extra power going from the Esslinger to the Powder, and it seems like it has better highway power (in 5th at 60, and getting on the gas). It has a wider powerband now, and it pulls a bit better up top now than it did before. Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase.

On the 2000 S/R, the Esslinger made a pretty good difference. Definitely pulled better, and had much better throttle response.

Thanks a lot Matt, for supporting the site with such a wonderful product!

+ 1 for the powder pully. The only downside I saw to this mod was the need for ODP. You get the set you are good to go. Faster rpms.

I don't have the overdrive. It doesn't seem any worse to me than the Essy.

<3 my powder pulleys. With my 1200W in the trunk I notice no difference in light dim while using both UDP and ODP which makes me happy. Think I would have had a problem with the UDP and subs without the ODP.

Absolutely a good buy. Had a scare when I first drove. Heard a metallic clang from under the hood while on the express way. Pulled over, pulleys still on, belt still tight. Turns out a couple days later my friend texted me telling me he was missing a socket. I think he may have left it on the alternator or something. =x

Quick question about the Powder pulley. How hard is it to remove once it has been driven with for over a year or so? I had to remove my MAC pulley to do the timing belt and I had to destroy it to get it off and it wasn't worth the time. I would like another pulley and Powders seems like the best but if I will have this issue again I'll skip it. Let me know, Thanks

I found my MAC pulley and belt that I bought, what- 3 years ago and forgot about. Seems that at the time there was a warning to remove the clear coating from the center hole because it screws up the fitment.

Need advice: Does that same clear coating covering the belt grooves make the belt slip? What's the best solvent to get the coating off?

So if there isn't the same problem getting the powder on then I'm guessing it comes off easier?

I took the Essy off no problem. I haven't tried to take the Powder pulley off, but if it's the same, it would be cake.

I love the throttle response with it!
