    Default pop-up message....

My windows XP OS keeps saying that my computer is infected with a malicious virus and tells me that I need to download a spyware application. It tells me to download "ieav.exe". I don't trust this and I need some help in stopping this window from poping up everytime I do any time of web browsing......

your best bet for that is to call up best buy or circuit city or one of your local computer places and see if they can help.

Go to windows.com or microsoft and do their online scan and then download the milacious virus remover and that might help.

Yeah, if you want to be for as much money as the computer is worth.

    Try this:

Download Spybot Seach and Destroy AND Adaware. They are the 2 best spyware removal utilities.

You can get them both from www.download.com (trustworthy site, I use it all the time).

Do you have an antivirus program? If not, or is you're using one you have to pay for like Norton, get AVG Free Antivirus from www.grisoft.com or www.download.com . It's free and works GREAT.

Also, a Windows Disk Cleanup and Defrag won't hurt.

Run all of these and if it still has problems, come back here.

Also, are you running IE or Firefox? Won't make a difference with the steps I posted but just wondering. Firefox also has a great popup blocker.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will work wonders. Do a google search for it and download the free trial. Update it, then run a "quick-scan" while you have nothing else running on the computer. It should take care of any problems.

Sure, try 3 of them, can't hurt.

Usually, most spyware programs can't catch EVERYTHING, so using more than one is a good idea. The 2 I posted usually get everything the other can't catch and both are full versions and free, not trials. The combo of those two work the best from my experience and trying out a lot of utilities.

I agree. You posted 2 good programs, but my wife got a bad bug on her computer a few weeks ago and the Malwarebytes program was the only thing we found that would remove it. We tried everything else for days, lol. Also, even though it's technically a trial, it will do all basic functions needed indefinitely.

Buster is right those are great programs. I use them all the time on my friends computers make sure you Immunize with spybot and get Ccleaner "Crapcleaner" its not for spyware but you might free up a gig or more of junk files. And if you don't run firefox get it oh and I have fixed computers for people that first went to Best Buy they got hard. Almost forgot turn off Java in Firefox i never really use it if you need it turn it on the off when your done.

Only thing I have ever used is Windows Defender, or whatever it's called now. Never had a single issue.

You can try all of those other programs, having more than one won't hurt. Also, head on over to www.trendmicro.com and run their house call scan, it's pretty good at finding everything and will even run multiple scans to make sure.

Get a Mac and you don't have to worry about any of those problems.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help you guys gave me.....the "Malwarebytes" program is what did the job for me......perfect.

I called up to Best Buy before I tried anything, they were gonna charge me $199 to fix my PC, when all it took was to run a Malware buster.....I'm glad I took the chance on these programs you guys suggested!!!

    Thanks again!!!!!!
