Default How To Winterize Your Car Properly

    Item’s Needed
    -Sea Foam
    -Air Compressor
    -Car Cover
    -Moth Balls
    -Tape
    -Newspaper
    -Battery Charger

    1) Find a clean and well-ventilated area. You want to keep as much moisture down and allowing the car to breath. Also when storing keep it away from any kind of furnaces. The heat from the furnaces can be hot enough to cause damage to the paint as well the soot that comes off from it.

    2) Make sure the air is properly inflated in your tires. Back in the old days people would put their cars on jack stands to prevent flat spots. This did occur with the older generation of tires on how they were structured. Now days you don’t have to worry as much. Even if you did get a flat spot you could generally get it gone by just driving on it. Plan to add another 5-8psi to the tires, since generally you will loose pressure in the wintertime.

    3) You want to add some kind of fuel stabilizer. Make sure your gas tank is full to help prevent moisture build up(causing the tank to rust from the inside out). With the tank filled up I use Sea Foam (1oz per gallon of gas on a zx2 you need roughly 13ozs). You can buy this at your local hardware and automotive store.

    4) Moth balls are great thing to throw under your car to keep critters away. I would put mousetraps and mouth balls around the surrounding area. Also when its in storage tape up the end of your exhaust to prevent mice from going in.

    5) Car covers are a nice investment. They can help keep dust off the car.

    6) Take the battery out of the car. When your car is sitting there it roughly takes around 20-30ma of power. Take it out and put it in a nice storage spot in a house if possible. Every so often take a car charger to it and put it on the lowest setting (generally 2amps). Never have the battery on concert as this discharges the battery. Put it on cardboard or wood.

After doing all of this your car is ready for storage. Some people do say to leave it till spring after doing this. Personally I believe to start it up once a month if possible. This helps relive the pressure on the valve springs as well as lubricate the motor.

p.s: This is for a Fuel injected motor. Carb motor's can be a tad different than this.

    Nice, dude.

Just wanted to note that some of us up here in the great white north prefer to use a pure ethanol based fuel stabilizer like STA-BIL instead of Sea Foam. It seems some members of CASC and the Ice Racing series I race with have had some issues with Sea Foam in the past...I would have to research what it was that they found but these are die-hard rally guys and seem to be on the money 99.9% of the time.

UPDATE - Apparently it burns out our plugs when we start the vehicle at -40degC in the dead of winter. Happened to a few guys running Subbies and Audis; they had to head out to the store after practice to buy some new plugs. We apparently used it in our Celica All-Trac for one season but switched back after the banter. Figured we were better off safe than sorry

UTI told my friends not to use stable as it has alcohol which drys out injector o-rings. This is why I stay with sea foam for a car that is garaged.

Keep mice away. People around here who have farms do it. That and steel wool and dryer sheets work good as well.

Don't have to be on a farm. I had a mouse in my camaro a couple winters ago. Lil bastard ran down my roll bar into my trunk when I was chasing him. Think it may have gotten fumigated in the spring but oh well.

    How I winterize my SR.
Check the antifreeze, install four Blizzaks, put a snow brush in the car and I'm good to go.

I didn't see any mention of anti freeze in Krux's list.

True I could put this in there yet if you keep up with your antifreeze(proper maintenance) I didn't see why to put it in. Yes though if you are at the 30k/3yr mark it would be great to flush out your antifreeze. Based on electrical discharge it will do over time to your metals.
