im interested in auto-x but im afraid of breaking my car. Being a teen and harder than i should've been has resulted in replacing trannys. i've grown up but the fear now that i have to pay for it vs my parents = me afraid of me breaking my car(along with no funds/job to fix atm)

let me know if you want to go to a race with me at Gateway Int'l there near STL. i can show up early, help you prep, walk the course, show you the ropes, etc. your first time is a big overwhealming and busy, but it's soooo much fun, and every cell in your body will want more.
2000 S/R FSP build: APC shift knob, LED tails, zx2 sticker on the rear bumper, Silverstar headlights, blue spark plug wires, optima red top battery, Magnaflow muffler, and some lowering springs.
this is a hard one to try to convince people on...but autoX is generally no more harsh on your car than driving it on the street. your brake pads and tires will wear faster, but generally, if you are easy on the transmission, you won't be doing anything more than the open road does to your car already. in fact, if you autoX the right way (and not like me) all of your movements, throttle inputs, steering inputs, etc will be nice and smooth. the only time i've broken anything on my car, was completely my fault for abusing it, like jamming the shifter as hard as i could and breaking a shift fork...or too heavy on the throttle through a corner (which ultimately slows you down) and spinning the wheels, which isn't good on the diff.
ask and ye shall recieve..Charlotte, NC has an autoX clubhttp://www.ccrscca.com/solo-racing/
I could still attend a few here and there if it was that cheap here. It's $40-$50 for members, an additional $15 for the weekend membership for non-members and $5 for a helmet rental (can't afford my own). They do two events a month sometimes too. So most of the members are rich snooty guys with cars that cost more than a small house. It's had to try to fit in with them and LA and Phoenix are too far to travel to.
If I had a car that ran I could.

zxtwou2, this is a great thread.
I have been autocrossing for almost six years with my S/R and Miata. We have five clubs that put on autocrosses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In March, there will be 6 local autocrosses, plus 1 in OKC and 2 at Texas A&M in College Station, one National tour at Mineral Wells, one SCCA autocross school and two time trials. We can stay very busy and still not make all the events in most months.
I will help answer questions when I can.
2000 S/R Zinc Yellow poorly prepared SCCA FSP
Mods, 21mm RSB, K&N filter, Mobil1 oil, lots of cone marks.
I'm not afraid I won't do good, i'd probably suck but I wouldn't care what people thought. The thing i'm scared of is getting lost at the track, when I watch autox vids i'm thinking "how the fuck do they know where to go?" lol

Looking for a 00-03 decent shape, great running 5 speed zx2 for under 2500.
almost everybody at an autoX will walk the course with you if you let them know you are a first timer. they'll show you tips and tricks on how to find your way. some regions even do chalk outlines, or give out maps of the course. once you know what a gate and slalom (and pointers) all look like and do, it's really not that bad.
