I think being that all the force and weight will be on the welds holding the aluminum disc on (bolt seat) , and pending my book is right with the percentage of strength loss. I'd say yes, this does apply here. Only testing and time will tell.

You're talking about the welds themselves so i will address that instead of 6061, since any loss in strength will be insignificant. 4043 filler, in able to be called 4043 has to be of the same chemical properties as solid 4043. It will not be 83% weaker than the 6061.

For the record however, a steel bar would be more ideal imo. The weight savings would be only a couple pounds, which is insignificant when looking at weight reduction. Steel is stronger and more rigid. It's also cheaper material.

The book I'm reading says that when welding onto 6061, with either 4043 filler or 5054 (? not at my book, and I dont use 50xx) when melted it does not retain its same chemical charectoristics (sp? tired..sorry) The same goes for most metals. Its saying that the HAZ loses its strength by 83% but can retain its natural strength by doing said heat process.

Unless you're going to do AutoX where you're stressing the suspension anyways, these should hold up fine for the normal driver like myself.

Do I need one. NO. My Z is a daily driver not a track car. However, this will be a fun item to have while tootling throught the mountains.....

Corby, I'll get one in the next few days as soon as I can get back on here.......

I work around guys that have been welding airplane fixturing for 30+ years and have never seen that process. A quick google search reveals that either filler you're talking about is stronger than the weakest part of the heat affected zone. http://www.thefabricator.com/article...-5356-or-4043r

Says to use 5356 for fillet welds, since it's not getting heat treated after words and the strength is 50% higher than 4043.

You are right, it doesn't maintain it's full strength, but 83% is ludicrous. It would be softer than gold at that point.

thanks for the info matt, i didnt remember learning that in my metallic materials class so i wasnt really sure if that information was correct or not.

regardless, these bars are strong as shiat and i cant wait to test it out at autox.
