A friend told me Mobil One was crap after using it. I like Royal Purple better than Castrol, but it's a bit more expensive. I've suggested it to a few people who all had good things to say. One of the smartest guys at the parts store I use told me about a test the Minnesota State Police did in a few cruisers where they tested Royal Purple and the oil they were currently using for 100,000 mi without changing it. The Royal Purple did not break down at all (viscosity and lubricasy didn't change), and the cars didn't have any problem. The other cars lost power as the oil degraded, and they did have some issues. I've gone 12,500 on Royal Purple without a change and problems.

100k without an oil change? No thanks.

This thread will be filled with opinions, and little to no facts. The only way to tell which oil is better is through scientific testing after the oil has been used, etc etc.

anything about I'm going to see if I can find anything about what the MSP did, but it sounded like they did test it. 12,500 was all I dared. That's 2x the normal interval, plus some laziness. And yeah, there will be plenty of opinions, especially once people really start talking about cost.

Update; I've done some looking and can't find the test I mentioned, but haven't tried all that hard. I've looked at some test results, but all the pages seem to advertise for one of the competitors, which tells me there may be some bias (especially because the advertiser always seems to be the best oil). I'm curious to see if anybody can find a good, fair test.

Realistically if you get a good synthetic oil and do regular filter and oil changes you should be fine regardless of the brand. I've tried several oil brands and I won't say any of them are bad. in fact they're all good, but from what I've used RP has been the best.

I did find this though. It was posted on nsxprime.com, I found it through a google search. http://www.repairfaq.org/filipg/AUTO/F_oil_facts.html

I’ve heard of two people who used Royal Purple that “said” there engines blew because of it. What can’t be ignored however are the countless ATV’s and motorcycles my dad and I work on that had some sort of engine trouble (rod knock, metal shavings in oil, eta) that had recently switched to Royal Purple, (we just got another one in yesterday actually).

I’ve gone 15,000 miles on Mobile One in the Z with no problems.

for me its all about cost.

if im changing oil in a costumers car im using regular mobil 1. unless they want synthetic.

if i changing my own cars oil i use synthetic only. mainly for the extended change intervals. i use Q horsepower at a 10k interval.

i have used castrol edge and royal purple. the castrol did just fine but the royal purple wasn't as broken down as much that i could see.

I have tried RP. My mileage fell off half way through the normal change cycle. I am more curious how well the new Penzoil Ultra is, but I prefer to run the motorcraft blend in the Z.

I'm rockin the Castrol Edge, now. Castrol Syntec was my first synthetic, and I've switched around with different synthetics. The Edge has a guarnteed 15k mile extended drain/fill interval, so that was the deciding factor for me as I don't wanna worry if I go too far past my regular 5k changes.

I have no relevant facts or opinion to contribute. Just my $.02.

For extended oil change intervals, Amsoil guaranteed 25,000 mi/1 year intervals>*. It may cost more, but you get what you pay for.
