    Default Stipped 3rd Gear @ 200 WHP

Just thought some of you guys might want to know that I stripped 3rd gear at a road course last weekend. I'm only making 200 whp. I have heard of 3rd gear stripping from a lot of drag runs and over 300 whp. Never thought I'd strip mine. I've mainly been doing road courses. Done about 9 road course weekends and 1 maybe 2 days of drag racing on this transmission. Its a completely stock mtx with Redline MTL.

i stripped my spider gears at 189 whp and 233 wtq which isnt uncommon but the main drive gear was starting to strip as well. trans is weak and 3rd is most common stripped gear.

2nd and 3rd gear are weak. Actually it's the forces acting upon the 1st-2nd gear shift and the 2nd gear to 3rd shift because the mainshaft and secondary shaft spread apart (try to anyway) because of the helical gear setup. And you then try to shift fast.

Basically your putting 200whp into the edges of the helical gears, stripping off the tips of those gears. I believe thats what happened. Or you blew up your diff which I could easily see if your doing autocross.

Mech, I assume I have. Still had all the other gears. Will be replacing the trans this weekend. Probably pull it apart next week to verify. Yesterday it stop engaging 2, 4 and reverse.

Probably what happened Chillin. Its not the diff. Car still drives fine in the other gears. I don't have a Mfactory.

A bad shift fork would affect two gears not just one. Yes that's good tranny fluid. Right next to Amsoil. Hell, It'd better be for the price. LOL.

Nope. We talked about it Zach. But I never got it. I should be good. Thanks though. Renting a Fiat for the weekend to get around. Should be interesting.

well thats true the only other thing i would think of is a bad syncro... Would it grind goin in or would it throw it out of gear before that happened??

If it is a synchro, yes it would grind or throw it out of gear. Then you would have to rev match. Synchro's work for two gears as well.

I have heard of this before. Cyro treating your gears would be a wise investment.

The last person I know who destroyed his third gear was kickerZX2 on the dyno on a third gear pull he destroyed that gear with 300whp.

I've stripped 3rd clean, based on what you are saying it sounds like this is what happened. It is odd at your power level , but anything is possible with this trans.

5speed, when I get ready to build a trans I will have it cryo treated along with the polish work JohnP does. Plus the upgraded shift forks and Mfactory should make it damn near bullet proof.

Definitely odd, Pure. I automatically thought I blew the diff because it happened as I was exiting a 90* corner. Then realized it was only third that was missing. Still had all the others.

About to get it towed to the shop to swap it out tomorrow. Putting in Boss's old ZX2 trans with the 98 gears, beefed up diff and thicker axles. Gonna use the sedan 5th gear to save on gas a little.
