I searched far and wide for a similar problem, but couldn't find anything.
Whenever I check the oil I can't get a good reading because there's oil halfway up the dipstick. I had a '98 zx2 and now a '99, and they both had the same problem. It doesn't matter when I check it, when it's been sitting for a day, or while it's running, it just won't show me the true oil level. Is this a common problem, or do I have bad luck with dipsticks? I don't know where to begin because there's another dipstick behind the wheel and he doesn't know anything.

Does the oil smell like gas?
It just smells like oil
Are you positive it isn't over full? If you are, check it multiple times. Eventually the oil built up in the dipstick tube will come out and you'll be left with a true reading. I used to have to check my white zx2 a few times to see where it really was because oil would do the same thing. I'm not sure why it seemed to linger in the tube. Could be sludge in there I suppose. Next time you change your oil pop out the tube and see what you can see.

Yeah I pull it out a few times after cleaning it each time, and I can kinda tell where the oil level is, and it looks like it's right where it should be. Ok so I'll pop it out next oil change and clean it and see if it does anything.
Common thing. As long as you wipe the stick when you first take it out and reinserting and the level appears OK muchado about nothing.
are you checking it while its running?
It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over the road.
your not seeing coolant or anything are you... because with the 2 cars ive had, ive never seen oil half way up the dipstick unless checked like the above post.

this is common, happens to me everytime. Just look where there is a solid line of oil and thats your level.
No coolant on it and I usually check it cold
yeah you may have some other oil down the edges but you should be able to see a solid lines. I've never had issues with the Z stick, but my Fusion.... don't even get me started...stupidest dipstick design...EVA

1st question is how much oil are you putting in? If putting in full 5 quarts, it is simply overfull.
When the engin runs, oil splashes everywhere in the crankcase, and since the dipstick is immersed in the oil it is normal for some to get higher on the stick and shows when you first pull it out.
That is why you wipe it off and reinsert to get the correct level.
It sounds like a perfectly normal condition.
^yep, mine for some reason doesn't see to "drain back" either, it just stays there unless I pull the stick....wipe and restick it
When you pull the stick out you leave oil along the way out of the tube , you have to wipe it a few times to get all the oil out of the tube to get a clean reading , just the way it is .
