my zx2 has developed a tick/clicking sound:
-the sound can be heard from outside the car and is loud enough to echo off of cars as i pass them
-the sounds coming from the trans as far as i can tell
-the sound clicks faster the faster the car is rolling'
-the sound is unchanged by rpm
-the sound is unchanged when brakes are applied (other than the fact the car slows down (read next))
-the sound continues when the engine is shut off (off at 30mph continues til stopped, clicks slow as the car slows)
-the sound louder as the shifter is moved from left and right (both in gear or not)
-the sound becomes less even (louder/softer) when stick is in neutral
-the sound is unchanged if the clutch is engaged or not
-the clicking can be felt in the shifter.
-the click stays whether accelerating or not
-I checked all four tires for nails/screws/rocks ect.
-sound started day after severe weather,(high winds, downed trees, heavy rain) (I did drive the car that night, but it was after the rain stopped, it was parked outside during)
- the sound seems to be uneffected when turning but I haven't found a proper quite place to drive full circles to test it out.
i searched for 2 hours looking to see if i could find a post about this, but my only internet is a beat up old htc evo on the non-4g sprint network so i couldn't find anything. i did find the posts about "only s/r"'s click, but this is different this is constant.
any help would be greatly appreciated i need to drive 500+ miles round trip the last weekend of august and want to figure this out idf i can before risking the drive if the trans is going bad.

Just a suggestion, but check your tires for screws/nails, or rocks in the tread. I had a rock in my tread and every time I was right next to a curb with the window down I could hear clicking that sped up and slowed down with the speed I was going and it drove me crazy until the rock finally flew out (heard the ping as it hit the car somewhere) and the sound quit.

I checked all 4 tires first thing today, unfortunately that wasn't it. Added that to list.
Any change when turning the car? Bad CV joints make clicking sounds so I hear.
i had a trans which was making noises like this and then the differential gears broke apart in the trans after about two weeks of hearing the noises
since it is not a rock in the tires, I would check all 4 cv boots next. Also make sure that the passenger side axle is not binding and causing this noise
If it is felt in the shifter, it is internal to the transmission. Does it sound like it is one click per rotation of the tires? It is sounding like the pin that holds the spider gears in the diff may be loose or has slipped out enough to bang on the housing. This is not something to just sit idly by and see if it resolves itself. It will resolve itself by grenading.

i used to put zip ties on people's axles at work to mess with them. it made a clicking noise dependent on wheel speed when the tail of the tie would slap into something nearby. could be something axle related![]()
2000 S/R FSP build: APC shift knob, LED tails, zx2 sticker on the rear bumper, Silverstar headlights, blue spark plug wires, optima red top battery, Magnaflow muffler, and some lowering springs.
My first instinct would still be a CV boot, as you may not have one after the severe weather.. a small branch or something could have tore one open and left the joint ungreased. Just check before you tear into a transmission swap.

Here is the transmission disassembly howto thread

The Pin runs through the center of the carrier. When you have the differential out, it is plain as day.

The vss has the green plastic on the top right?
If so my brother tried to remove this part thinking it had to do with my speedo shutting off on the hwy, but couldn't get it off end the one bolt mount is not on it right now.

i'm willing to bet it's the diff. two of the 5 i've blown up (or has it been 6?) have made a noise dependent on wheel speed and have been felt in the shifter.
