Default I need a little help with a big question! :)

Hello everyone, This week my daughter wrecked her car, minor front end damage, both the airbags deployed. I know I need to replace the bags, the crash sensors and its computer, the airbag sensor, and the clock spring is there anything else that I need to replace?

My issue is that I cannot find the front crash sensors are on a 98 and a 02 zx2, does anyone know where they are? I have looked and looked again I cannot find them for the life of me. I have looked through page after page of useless info from chilton's etc....... and still no luck!

Any help is greatly appreciated, Respectfully,

    Thehashbrownclown

the crash sensor is in front of the ECU. between the ecu and the firewall.

you shouldnt have to replace the clock spring, just the airbags...unless the clockspring is damaged for some other reason.

oh and probably the windshield, did the passenger side airbag break the windshield when it deployed?

Yeah, the windshield is definitely toast. The clockspring is toast, the airbag deployment burnt it.

Is there only one crash sensor? I thought that there was a left and a right. OH, can i use 98 parts on a 02

Yep only one crash sensor....I honestly don't recall if they're different pre and post 99.5.

Maybe someone else can chime in on that one

Does anyone have a pic of what it looks like and where it is. I still cannot find it. Is it under the dash or is it the square box with an arrow pointing to the front of the car underneath the console? Thank you again.

That's the one. Its a little square box in front of the ecu.

Its "under" the dash in the sense that it is beneath it. But its pretty much on the floor, just in front of the ecu, dead in the center of the car.

IIRC you can see it by removing the kick panel by the drivers side right foot and passenger side left foot. I think you have to remove the ECU to get to it.....been about 6 to 8 years since I've replaced one.

I think your talking about the module. The sensors are right and left. They are a white colored block about the size of a half dollar with 3-4 wires coming out of them attached to the core support at the front near the radiator if I remember correctly. It's been a very long time since I seen them on my car as I don't really drive it nor work on it anymore but I do remember seeing them there.

Thank you both, I will look on the rad support again. I thought that's where they would be as well, I will take a look when daylight breaks. Thank you all for your input again.

Blue - I've never seen such a sensor on an escort. Only the module and airbags were replaced when I did this about 7 years ago.

Yeah, I have owned a few of these and 2 were rebuilds. I love these cars. I was just stumped because the people i have talked to even mechanics have said that every car has to have crash sensors. Well this one has a different style of sensor. Thank you all for your help. Now I will go dismantle the rest of this car. wait till you see what I have to dig through to get to this sensor! lets just say they thought it was a ashtray. The bad part is that I use to smoke, I did for 23 years. Now I think this maybe some kind of karma payback but this ride was nasty. I drove it 10 miles with no serpentine belt! 210,000 miles and it runs smoother than one with 90,000. Trust me I would keep the donor but it needed more work than what it was worth to repair. Thank you again TheEvil and thank you for the all data clarification.

    You're welcome.

I'm just glad to hear you plan on fixing it up and its not another zx2 heading to the scrap yard!

I bought my beater about 7 years ago after it was involved in a font end collision, so I've been down this path before. It had 28k miles on it. I rebuilt it and drive it daily, 144608 on it right now.

I personally own 5 zx2s currently...3 are tagged and on the road, one is a parts car (my beater got its MTX transmission back in February) and the other is a long term project.

There's a bunch of us on here that know these cars quite well. If you have any questions, do a search first there still is a bunch of knowledge on the forums, if you can't find an answer go ahead and post your question/issue.

    Welcome to the site.

Well, after popping the hood and looking around, I believe they are located below the headlights on the body at the front of the from "frame" that runs along each side of the engine. It's a small white plastic assembly .

My 1998 ZX2 factory manual makes no mention of the impact sensors, it only talks about the module. Looking at the pinout diagram in the electrical manual it also had no listing for any impact sensors. I looked around on my 98 and did not see any, but it was dark out. And raining. Maybe they made a change with the 99.5 and up ZX2's. I know what blue is talking about, I had the airbags go off in a 98 Ford Contour, and it had 2 crash sensors in the front and an inertial sensor on the firewall, all of which fed to the airbag control computer. The airbags would only pop if one of the crash sensors and the inertial sensor triggered. You could reuse the control computer if there were no shorts in the system when the airbags triggered, if there were any shorts it would blow out an internal fuse in the computer that was not repairable, but you could at least use it to check if the short was still there or not by hooking up an airbag simulator. I made one by cutting off the airbag plugs and soldering a 2ohm 1/10 watt resistor across the leads. Plug them in and see if the codes all disappear.

You can do the same thing for your ZX2, the big thing to check for is that there are no shorts in the system. Since you burnt your clockspring would replace that, then hookup the airbag simulators. ZX2's airbags vary from 1.5 ohms to 3 ohms, so the 2 ohms would be my choice. If that clears all the codes, you are good to go. Manual specifies that you replace the module if you set off the bags, even if you are not throwing any codes, but would probably match the replacement airbag module from either the early series (98-99.5) or late series depending on the year of your car given there may be a difference. If you need a list of all the airbag codes from the airbag dashlight PM me and I will email you. They look pretty much the same for the ZX2 as they did on the Contour so I doubt they changed the codes from 98 to 2003 for ZX2s

Yeah, the airbags really annihilated an lot of stuff on my Contour, smashed the front and side windows, bent the dash frame, smashed the vents and glovebox. Great fun, but all repairable.

I cannot remember who was right. But the ECM and the bags are the only things that need to be replaced it is only 3 pieces. The ECM is kind of a bitch to get in and out. Thank you all for your help. It is greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, the clock spring most definitely got replaced. The only issue is the color of her interior is dark grey now there are 2 light grey pieces to compliment.
