    Default Unibody small crossmember

I'm not sure if there is a thread on here about this cross member, and I don't recall it being mentioned. About a year ago I noticed that early 98 ZX2s, escort sedans, and wagons all have this cross member installed. I believe that the bean counters at Ford eliminated this part after the first quarter of 98 production. My own late 98 did not come with it and the car has a manufacture date of 05-98. I bought two of them for my ZX2s on days at the junk yard when I couldn't find anything else to buy. On a side note all Escorts manufactured after this part was eliminated only have 4 of the 6 holes drilled out to install this piece. Wierd...I know.20171024_225656.jpg20171021_162549.jpg

i noticed this on my 98 parts car. my turbo car and the two dailys are 99.5+ so ive never noticed this until i started stripping the 98.

its just another little change they made going to the 99.5+ style. but i wonder why they put them there in the first place....

Under-body roll/deflector. Good for slammed cars; you could weld a cat food can to it and scrape on foolz.

Since the floor pan is concave in this area it could be argued that the piece adds a marginal degree of structural rigidity. Find the appropriate balance between the need for handling with having lower weight versus horsepower or in the case of Ford, what can we eliminate to save money.

this and a few more parts were eliminated during production for 98. Then there were the parts which were modified as production moved along. Even the antennae was changed

Will it make a difference in handling on a daily driver? I'm sure the added rigidity helps when your ripping around a corner but for daily "spirited" driving will it make a noticeable difference?

I dont think that small of a crossmember would make the chassis "feel" any stiffer. If you did a tortional rigidity test between 2 chassis (one with, one without the crossmember) there would probably be a small measurable difference. If that entire open area was boxed in with a plate, that would make a difference.

Looks like Ford put that crossmember in just the right spot to do a RWD conversion.

1 running Ford out of 5 isn't bad, right?
