Just did this, as the OP says, its easier than it looks, just keep track of your parts. i layed them out on the floor as if a diagram, all in order.
I need another S/R, taking donations
I did it this past weekend I slid the entire assembly off and kept it all in order. ziptied it all together untill I as ready to install.

I'm a little confused. I've seen references on this thread regarding the later taller 5th gear by noting the rpm at a given speed. According to this data irregardless of the 5th gear ratio (.73 or .79) the final drive is 4.10. So I'm guessing that the gearing for the differential is different. My car is turning 2500 rpms at 58.5 mph. I'm running 185 75 14 tires so stock tires would be 2500 rpm at 55 mph. This motor has the hp and tq to be push this car along at 2000 rpm at 60mph. I see from this link that a 91-93 has a final ratio of 3.41. Does anybody know if this trans would work with the DOHC ZETEC? This ratio with my tires would be turning 2093 rpm at 58.5 mph. Close enough.

what does irregardless mean?
2000 S/R FSP build: APC shift knob, LED tails, zx2 sticker on the rear bumper, Silverstar headlights, blue spark plug wires, optima red top battery, Magnaflow muffler, and some lowering springs.
from your own link..second definition: A word used by uneducated people intending to sound intelligent.
enough said.
i really cannot read your post. what exactly are you asking? what does final drive ratio have to do with a 5th gear swap? or tire size? organize it into pointed questions, and i can probably give you some answers.
it lowers rpm by 9%, enough for some improved economy on extended drives and nowhere near enough of a drop to affect power. Passing is still done easily on the interstate. Again, those numbers are with the 98 trans, 99.5+ wouldn't see enough difference to justify the swap
Pic of sedan gearset vs. 98 ZX2 gearset. I'd count teeth for comparison but that takes time

How much would it cost to just buy these gears new rather than trying to locate, pull, disassemble a junkyard trans?
98 zx2 five speed.
^I paid $50. I'll sell them for $100.
That's totes worth it. Where did you get them from?
me. that set is sitting on my kitchen counter. for sale.
Tempting..
The 5th gear ratio from a different car's trans still has the same ratio regardless of the final drive. Comparing car a's 5th gear ratio is spples to apples to car b's 5th gear even if one has a different finsl drive.
