First of all, who is the "we" he is referring to?
This is scary stuff - what is he contemplating?
After the load of flak he got after making this monumental statement, he came back with some apologetic rhetoric about the peace corp. He also wanted a virtually mandatory volunteer service of students.

But what would need funding as large as our present military?? That is an insanely huge amount! What would need to be as powerful and strong? Buy any interpretation, big changes are indeed planned by him.

If anything the comparison with the Nazis is more appropriate with the fascism of the Bush administration. Voum,tary service might be more similar to the Conservation Corps or WPA under FDR. Obama can't enact anything without congress, and we are going to have mostly the same group that are currently in office. It is significant that obama picked a moderate Democrat, biden, as a running mate, while Mccain picked a 'right wingnut' zealot in Palin. If anyone is concerned about the direction of the US, the best thing to do is to get as many moderte republican, democrats or independents elected in 2010 as possible.

By the way, what happened to all the claims and stories that Obama wasn't a naturally born US citizen and therefore couldn't be president ? At the very least you could have forwarded that 'gem' to Sarah Palin who would have known how to use it.

Thank you. You're one of the people who provides reliable links, it would help if more people followed your example. (On a separate note, I'm still waiting for proof that Obama isn't a natural born citizen.)

I'd expect such a force to be made up of a broad spectrum of civilians. If anything an armed civilian security force could counterbalance the strength of the federal gov't and effectively act as a militia. Give credit to all the citizens of this country. This could actually moderate Obama's abilities to make changes.

If McCain-Palin proposed this, it would immediately become the patriotic thing to do. I'd be concerned Alaskan members might be suspected members of the AIP.

The civilians are already empowered by the 2nd amendment. We do NOT need a funded civilian military that is as well funded as our REAL military.

Firstly - You talk about the need to decrease spending to save the country economically; this would just about exponentially increase spending.

Secondly - I would be very much concerned about radical civilians (and they do exists) taking matters into their own hands as it pertains to being part of a mobilized and federally funded military/militia

Third - If someone wants to serve in that fashion, they can enlist in the reserves and be in the national guard. Problem solved.

Someone mentioned V for Vendetta, while a bit of a stretch, it's quite possibly a good analogy. Chancellor Suttler had "finger men", who were basically civilians given the right to do whatever.

I'm not saying that's what Obama is proposing, but this is a step in that direction. The US military is supplemented by the reserve force that is nationally funded. The 2nd amendment gives the citizens the right to keep and bear arms, so we don't need to fund that right.

We have militia in all 50 states, we don't need a civilian militia.
